My two oldest kids started college when they were 16. But even if they'd been 18 I would have still made sure they had some money. I didn't want them to graduate with zero in their bank account. I don't know how much money you think kids earn during the summer but it is NOT enough for 8-9 months of school.

'Adult children' have college degrees, a career, and don't come home for the summer.

Those people we send off to college are not adults.


18 year olds are legal adults, by definition. You're raising yours to be dependent, entitled, immature adults; that's fine. But they're still adults.

Yes, times have changed. I paid $600 last fall for DD, senior in HS. DS, freshman in college cost about the same for books.

I know it doesn't help much as it was in the early 90s, but I got $500/semester and I had to use that money to buy books plus pay for gas when dong ride shares home - about 7 hours drive away.

After paying for tuition (especially if it is out of state), room and board, books and meal plans... why should they get allowances for personal items? When they come back home to visit or when I go visit them, I can give them some money but I certainly will not set aside a set amount of money for them monthly.

I wouldn't expect them to be offered at a Catholic university.

There are plenty of clinics in the city that will give you free birth control - including condoms. Plus, If she is on your health plan, she will get them through it.

I didn't get an allowance (attended college in the late 90's early 2000), but signed up for a credit card. When my parents found out, they made me pay it off with my summer job money. When my DD attends college she will have an allowance of $200 a month. That's only $50 a week which isn't much.
