My 1991 engagement ring was maybe $500, which was a fortune to us at the time. I keep it in my drawer for memory's sake, because I rarely wear jewelry. I wear a comfortable wedding band that was maybe $150.

This wasn't MY ring, but I went to help a friend of mine (and I'm friends with his now-wife) select a ring. He paid $68k from a dealer just for the diamond. I'm still floored when I think about it. I mean, there are people whose homes are less money than her ring. But, it is spectacular and she absolutely loves it.

I told my DH that I did not want anything more than a carat, that would feel like too much for me to wear everyday. So the stone is .91 carats, totals about 1.5 with the pave set diamonds in both bands. I love it, it is absolutely perfect.
The engagement ring is appraised at $9k, so it was probably a little less than that. Wedding band was $1600 (we bought it together).

Can't believe I am participating in this...I should go to bed!

No, I really don't. My wedding band/engagement ring (one ring for both) is five stones that combine to 1 carat. I love it and got compliments on it all the time. It was less than 3k. A 2 carat stone is really not my style, though I don't care what other people buy. I bought a ring advertised as an anniversary ring because I didn't like the appearance of any solitaire rings.

I think $25k for a 3 carat is low. My just under 2 carat was a little under $20k - it appraised for a little more. The quality of the diamond is really good. I get compliments on it all the time and I've only had it cleaned twice in 5+ years. I do think paying for a good diamond is better than paying for a big one.

Really? I wear my grandmothers 2.5 carat engagement ring and love it. And my 20 year old DD already has her eye on it.

I received my grandmother's engagement ring when she passed. Wasn't my style but my mom gave it to DH when we started talking about marriage. Dh knew it wasn't my style (and double checked with me that I didn't want it as is) and then had the diamond taken out and got a band he knew I would love. Saved a hell of a lot of money not having to buy a diamond! Plus the diamond holds sentimental meaning to me since it was my grandmothers (who I was very close to) and it was given to her from my grandfather (who I never met).

I posted upthread about mine that is worth 20k. I know because we have it insured and it had to be appraised and all that stuff. After 15 years of shared finances I just don't think it's a big deal anymore.

My stone is a little less than 2 carats and I don't think it looks gaudy. I don't know. I never would have spent that much on a ring, but it is truly a beautiful diamond. People stop me in grocery stores, post offices, etc. and comment on it. I am happy to know that one day we will be able to pass it on to a son or daughter.

Even if the kids don't use it as an engagement ring, they might LOVE that hand-me-down. My mother has my grandmother's ring that my grandfather gave her after they were established and had more money to spend on such things (probably an anniversary gift), and I have always thought it's the prettiest ring I've ever seen. It will be passed down to me as an heirloom, and I couldn't be happier about that.
