Devil's advocate here. Um, isn't the reason we have affirmative action to give minority kids with, presumably, fewer economic or social opportunities, an opportunity to go to great schools.
No one is saying this kids isn't qualified (at least I don't really see that here - apart from those accusing them of it). If his "story" "background" etc. impacted his acceptance, I say hooray! That means the system is working.

And, yes, if a kid is great at sports, I assume that helps him to be admitted. If a kid's last name is on a building, I assume that helps him to be admitted. Isn't this all a well-understood part of the admissions game?

Own it and be proud.

Asians are discriminated against in Ivy Leagues...but in reverse. Asians have to score higher than a white person, have more extra curricular activities, and almost solve world hunger to get into Ivy Leagues. A few months ago, there was news story about an Asian kid from immigrant parents that got $1mil worth of scholarships from various schools. The reason these stores are news worthy is because they are outstanding achievements. You have a better chance to get into an Ivy League if you come from money because you have the resources to do better in school, ie, prep classes and tutors. It is MUCH harder when you try to do it on your own, like the Asian kid in the news story, and most other immigrants that achieve this level of success.

I don't brag in the non-web world, but last year DD got into all 7 of the Ivies she applied to (she chose not to apply to Cornell). She also got into Duke and Georgetown. SAT score: 2250.

From the DCUM reaction to this story the News Editor was right. This story is damn good for circulation and revenue as it preys on the broad swathe of the American intelligence or lack thereof.

Newsworthy is defined by the Managing News Editors on the Editorial Boards of newspapers looking to drive up circulation and revenues.

Not so long ago when Obama was elected President of the US there are many, then and now, who still consider him a foreigner and not an American. He is still asked to produce his Passport/birth certificate. And many Americans still believe he is 3/5 of a Tea Bagger.

This passport/birth certificate request was never made of Bush, Carter and Clinton.
