There are many families at our HGC who do not have the means for prep classes. No way this is happening.

No one in our local HGC prepped for the test. This must only happen in the richer parts of the county and that is why the median scores there are higher.

We didn't prep, but it might be a good way to go if you think that it will make your child feel more at ease with taking the test. Just remember to not stress your child out. I saw some very anxious parents when we went for testing. (We were coming from a private school so the kids were tested at a separate facility.)

You are only fooling yourself if you claim zero enrichment and tutoring activities for your children. Do you live in the Appalachia? Do not insult our intelligence here with this nonsense. Tell your neighbor the same story?

This thread had gotten off track. The comment was made about prepping for the HGC test and now seems to have transformed into all sorts of academic prep. Prepping for an IQ test violates the intent and I would guess a waste of money for most kids. If people want to waste their money and time on that that's fine but I think its crazy. Spending money on tutoring, extra academic classes, contests etc. is something entirely different.

No, it is not entirely different. These activities "judiciously" and "strategically" done proximate to any test -- including the HGC test -- can make all the difference for some students. This is prepping even if you want to deny (look the other way and pretend) you did not use the services of Aristotle. The end result is the same.

There is no need to be ashamed. If Michael Phelps and Tom Brady can spend big bucks for prep at 7 you too can spend bucks at 7 for HGC (by way of SSAT/Explore/intense tutoring prep if that makes you feel better).
