omg six pages of replies…ok I admit I haven't read them all but want to mention that…Malcolm Gladwell's book "What the Dog Saw" has a chapter on tomato sauce.

Massive market research has divided people up into three categories when it comes to tomato sauce…I think it's spicy, plain, and chunky. It's very interesting--and good to know which kind you like, then you can narrow it down.

btw I just did a google search on

malcolm gladwell tomato sauce

and there is youtube video on this, as well as annotated speeches, LOL It's a big deal! (I suppose it justifies six pages of replies, ROTFL)

Ragu is fine. If I'm going to get picky about my sauce, I'm happy to make my own (not hard!) but I won't spend $$$ on jarred sauce - that's just wrong.

I like to buy sauce that doesn't have water in the ingredients and doesn't cost a fortune. Most of the "better"/mid-priced brands contain water. Walmart actually sells one by Victoria's Trading Company that is not bad -- no water and $3.50 per jar.

Ragu is awful!

Another vote for Wegmans Grandma's Pomodoro Sauce. Not a fan of the Grandpa or vodka sauces.

Rao's currently has a sticker coupon on the jars, at least at our local Safeway.

Really like Whole Foods Marinara.

Love Rao's and Patsy's. Wegmans Italian Classics sauces are great too - they have a variety of nice flavors.

Oh, and an "honorable mention" goes to the Giada sauce, which of course is only available at Target!

I also like Classico spicy red pepper
Trader joes maranara in the jar and a couple of their other ones

I'd say Victoria is the closest to Rao's in my list
