Yes. She went to boarding school and they taught the Mid-Atlantic accent. It's halfway between British and American accents, and was completely made up to sound educated and elite.

Miss Porter's is in Farmington, CT. Before that she went to Chapin which is in Manhattan. I know many many people who went there and none of them speak like that.

I don't think it was all fake, but the "breathiness" does sound a bit affected. Still, she was a lovely and strong woman.

It reads as southern to me, but I think that's the lack of the final "R" sounds and also some of the diphthongs on the vowels which give it a bit of a drawl. Not like Katherine Hepburn, who has no "R" but has short vowels. (Hepburn also has the very characteristic creaky voice, aka "vocal fry".)
