These are very good advices! Can't believe the boy got a 4.99 GPA, amazing!
Now for this girl, here is my list:

Reaching: Hopkins, Cornell, Carnegie, Emory
Others that she should focus on: William and Mary, VaTech, Penn State, Georgia Tech
Safety: George Mason? Purdue?

Hopkins and Cornell are way beyond reaches!

As are Carnegie Mellon and Emory. William and Mary would also be a reach. Penn State seems appropriate.

^^^and don't forget those athletes!

No one gets into William and Mary with a 3.5. Even athletes are required to have a 3.75. I used to teach there. I know.

Also, liberal arts colleges tend to have somewhat screwed up gender ratios, and therefore it's harder to get in if you're a girl. Even if the Naviance data shows kids with below a 4.0 getting into these schools, chances are they are boys, URM's, first generation college attenders, people who recently discovered they are Native American, etc.
