Yes I had grit or sand in the can of Libby Pumpkin. I hope not glass. I did have a severe stomach ache and cramping. I was really concerned. Good to know I am not the only one.

Who are the watchdog group that are supposed to be on top of these stories and complaints. This has been going on for years. This is Feb.11,2019, this has apparently been going on for years. Last night I made two pumpkin pies, and they had so much grit in it, we had to throw them away. This is the first time i've ever had this happen. its been about six years since I have cooked pumpkin pie and I was so happy just smelling them. What a disappointment. Canned pumpkin was Walmart brand, great value. Last thanksgiving my mom went to a dinner and bought a beautiful Costco pumpkin pie. She was so embarrassed and mad, she said it was like ground glass, or sand with every bite. we were really surprised to find htis has been going on for years.

Christmas 2018: no grit!!
I don't know what you all are doing wrong, but I've never had an issue. I just made my Christmas pie and it is delicious! I cooked the extra filling in a separate dish -- just ate it and it was totally fine.

I've had this problem a number of times with Libby's canned pumpkin. My husband accused me of chipping the porcelain mixing bowl with the mixer. I threw out all my spices and bought new ones - still had the problem. I was wracking my brains about it - glad to at least know the cause of the problem is the pumpkin (how frustrating.)

I used WF pumpkin puree and it was fine.

I have wondered for the last few years why I had the grit in my pumpkin pies, I always thought it was the nutmeg spice and bought all new spices this year...same problem with the grit, the pumpkin puree I bought was a store brand so it must be a common problem among different brands

I think I will cook sweet potato pie from now on--or process my own pumpkin which is a longer, more tedious task. I don't want to eat that grit in my pies.

Libby’s pumpkin purée chosen as best- the regular not the organic.

One jumped into my cart yesterday. It has been severely testing my resolve.

Good idea! I'll get one for my family.

Just made a pumpkin baked pasta using Libbys canned pumpkin (puree?)... occasional grit here, both in sampling directly fromt eh can and finished product.

thought I would add to this lovely thread, since it confirmed what i thought!

Going to try getting trader joes, whole foods or an organic brand next time, if i can find them... a few other posters seem to have had good experiences with these.

Can was purchased in Brooklyn, NY.

Cheers

I grew up on Libby's pumpkin pie, my mom would make twenty or so every Thanksgiving, give a bunch away as gifts and freeze what we didn't eat. Though it's been years since I had a Libby pie, I've never experienced this gritty texture! Maybe it depends on the pumpkin crop for a particular year or a new manufacturing process that's causing it?

Ah, this good old thread. Fall has arrived!
