Thanks for letting us know, OP. I'm just starting out on the college search with my daughter who's looking for the same things you mentioned your son wanted. I'm curious what other schools you considered and why you chose Sarah Lawrence. If you have time to reply, that would be helpful to hear another perspective.

Middlebury is mostly white bread New England.

U of Vermont has LOTs of granola, crunchies, oh, and lots of liberals/socialists.
