I do not want my DD to go to a school that is too heavily female because then the men on campus act too entitled. So I am all in favor of taking gender into account.

But you are on to something. As another poster mentioned most schools seek gender parity. And in order to get boys, at most schools, GPA's and test scores are a bit lower so they have it easier than girls. At engineering schools girls have an advantage because, again, the school is seeking gender parity and not as many girls apply. So the bar is set a little lower

Most disadvantaged at this point are Asian kids - too many Asian kids with stellar test scores, GPAs and rigorous programs and not enough spaces for the spots allocated for this group for the school to be able to say that they have a balance of gender, race, etc.

Unless you live at home usually living on campus is less expensive than an apartment. To start with apartments have 12 month leases so unless you can sublet you are paying while its vacant. Depends on the location of the school of course and how expensive the housing is.

College is MUCH harder to get into these days. DD is a NMSF, valedictorian, 7 APs before senior year (and got all 5s), legacy, and major extracurriculars (nothing national, however). Deferred from Ivy where she is a legacy.

All schools try for an even balance of males and females(if at all possible).

For those who haven't been through the college application process lately, it has become SUPER competitive especially at the top schools.
