I went in for a mammo/ultrasound and there is a mass that is suspicious shown on both mammo/ultrasound and the report says this:

There is an oval mass measuring
12mm x 14mm x7mm in the left breast at 2 o'clock located 7 centimeters from the nipple. No evidence of any solid mass or other abnormality in right breast.

IMPRESSION:
Oval mass in the left breast is suspicious. Biopsy is recommended. The patient was informed of the exam results by the radiologist before
leaving the facility.
BI-RADS CODE: 4 - Suspicious Abnormality


I'm really scared. If ultrasound report says suspicious, is there more chances of malignancy? Is core needle biopsy or excisional better? They asked me to schedule a core needle biopsy. Can I ask for an excisional? Is it better to do the biopsy with a radiologist or with the surgeon?

I have been seeing a surgeon due to abnormal mammograms with complicated cyst in last year's ultrasounds (I had a 6 month follow up so two were done - one at radiology and follow up with surgeon). Both times there were cysts in ultrasound. I have dense breast so have been doing mammo and ultrasound. This is the first time that mammogram also shows an abnormal mass and it is freaking me out.

I hope you’re doing okay, pp. I was in a very similar spot. Had my first mammogram in early august. Got called back the very next day to come back for more imaging and then they had me speak to the doctor immediately afterwards. They found a cluster of grouped calcifications and she wanted me to have a biopsy. I waited for two weeks which was hard and caused great stress. Then, I had it last week and waited a full week for results-again agonizing and stressful. I wish I had asked my doctor for anxiety relief and I will if this happens again. I got a great call today though that it was not malignant and I was also BIRADS 4. Hang in there!! The odds are in your favor!

I HAD A 3D mammogram bc of my breast implants and also also had a ultrasound done

ultrasound guided biopsy was requested . this was on 8/25/21 my appt is 8/31/21 with the doctor to look over reports and discuss if biopsy is needed and if so to schedule a date
im terrified and all Ido is cry . the fear of leaving my three children motherless the fear of a slow painful death battling cancer too. feels like a death sentence .

findings as it states in my report there are scattered areas of fibroglandular density

there is a mass within the palpable area of concern withi the 5oclock left breast which likely corresponds to the 5oclock lesion seen on same day ultrasound guided ultrasound/aspiration recommened
0.1 cm hypoechoic lesion 5cm from the nipple corresponds to mammographic mass

assessment :birads cat 4 suspicious finding

PP from 8/30 ^^^ - did you see your doctor yesterday?

Yes, PP, please ask for Xanax or Ativan, you don't need to feel like this. I lost 5 lbs. waiting for my biopsy results and slept maybe 3 hours a night and it accomplished nothing. In my case I did get a cancer diagnosis and the fear now that the worst has actually happened is significantly less than when I was waiting for the unknown. I had a bad 48 hours and then I picked myself up and looked forward; staying at that level of panic and misery any longer was utterly exhausting and useless. The odds are in your favor but please know that either way, the anguish doesn't last and you will not feel like this forever.

Another BC survivor here. Diagnosed six years ago and doing okay as far as I know! Please know this is by far the worst time in this journey. If it is, in fact, cancer, there are so many ways to treat it, especially when it’s caught early. And I agree with the PP above, ask for anxiety meds from your PCP or OBGYN. I think everyone should be prescribed Zanax as soon as they are diagnosed. Best of luck to you OP, and keep us posted!

Hi new PP. consider asking your primary doctor for some anxiety medication. I recently had a biopsy and my doctor prescribed me meds so I could sleep. I was waking up in the middle of the night and having anxiety attacks where I just cycled through worst case scenarios. They were just a crutch to get me through the waiting period without driving myself crazy.

*hugs*. I'm a BC survivor (diagnosed at age 42. Now 3.5 years post op and everything seems fine so far...). Waiting for information is by far the worst part of the process. I hope you feel somewhat reassured that your BIRADS score means that there's still a decent chance it isn't cancer. If it is cancer, most of them are highly treatable, especially when caught early. PP - I just want to acknowledge reading your post. I can only imagine how anxious you must feel. Your appointment is tomorrow, nothing i can say will take your anxiety away except that in less than 24 hours you will be armed with more information. Please keep us updated.

4-c is SCARY (76-80% high suspicion for cancer/malignancy, as you know). I have it too. Your doctor won't know anything more (the internet and info from those you reach out to are actually the best resources, unless you have the world's most wonderful doctor who can spare more then 5 minutes). Only thing to do is hope for the best, but prepare for the worst to some degree. Assume it's possible and get mentally prepared to face and deal with it. Remember there are tons of survivors. At least it sounds like you have decent insurance. I'm having to wait over a month for biopsy (no option of scheduling myself due insurance - have to have authorizations and approvals that are a NIGHTMARE, even before dealing with outrageous charges - more worrisome then possibility of cancer at this point). Count small blessings and be strong. We are able to deal with anything... ANYTHING! And we can always hope to be in the 20%.... Somebody has to be!

Pp, if you haven't been there yet, I highly recommend the forums on breastcancer.org. I dealt with a DCIS diagnosis last fall, and found them very helpful.

Op here - I missed the last post from 2017 (I’m not as consistent on the boards), but I’m still doing well. I went the double mastectomy route. No radiation (clean, wide margins), no chemo. I decided against the AIs because of the side effects and read too many stories of recurrence despite taking the AIs. I don’t regret the mastectomy, but I did have five reconstruction surgeries, which was hard.

Best wishes to you pp as you move forwar. Remember to be an informed patient as medicine is a business. At no time was that more apparent than when I was in treatment.

I imagine the PP did a search based on her diagnosis and it produced this thread. OP to this thread: did you end up getting mastectomy or just radiation treatment?
