OP, consider Del Ray. It has everything you're looking for. Great neighborhood, great families, crunchy leanings, safe, good preschools, reasonably priced, and close to public transit. The other areas that PP mentioned aren't nearly as nice as del ray.

Another vote for Takoma Park, MD or it's sister neighborhood across the border Takoma, DC. It's not urban but very walkable with lots of amenities including libraries, pools, farmers markets, co-op groceries, cafes, restaurants, post office, toy store, hardware store, clothing stores, and a great non-traditional movie rental place.
