I am a high school student, and earn $15 per hour for tutoring elementary school students. I could probably negotiate $18-20 pretty easily, but I just accept the $15 rate. I would say $20-$25/hr for the college student, and no extra pay for gas/travel time.

We have paid anything from $45 to $60, but we once paid $120 for a tutor who caters to private school kids. Our child goes to public, but has some learning issues so we paid for someone who had worked at a private school as a learning specialist and teacher and she had all sorts of training (that we later found out the public special educators get too). Never again. The reasonable ones were public school teachers-either regular or special ed and/or reading specialists and IMO they were better and less full of themselves.

That's a massive amount and I would never pay it for a high school kid but if he can get it, good for him.

My high schooler charges $45/hour regardless of student age and meets them wherever the parents want. He has done it as a short time favor for family friends for $25-30 . The discounted rates essentially meanst that he is paid for transportation time and gas. (He also provides free tutoring to underprivileged kids.) I understand the rate seems high and he may not be affordable but he is often traveling a distance. He is teaching fundamental concepts vs drilling. The kids really like him because he's young and fun. He turns away business.

I did this when I was in college, but I worked for a company. They charged $60 an hour, and I was paid $30. Travel time was not included, which was a real bummer.

I tutor in the DC/Bethesda/Ch Ch area. Have 20 years elementary teaching experience in MCPS with a master's degree in special ed and reading specialist certification. I charge $90 per hour. Several of my colleagues charge the same amount.

I am a former teacher and have considered tutoring but the business set-up seems daunting.

This was my thread (from 3 years ago!!) We kept the college freshman for that summer and moved onto a professional once the school year started. Our child's teacher recommended a colleague (another teacher from a school where she used to teach); that teacher charged $50 for the hour and it's been a great three years.

When I was a student like 20 years ago (high school) I got $10/hour to tutor a younger student in Spanish.

This year I paid a retired teacher $50/hour to tutor my 5th grader in math. She met her at school for one hour a week; we didn't pay any transportation costs.

We pay 50/hour for a certified teacher in our school district. A college freshman is absolutely NOT qualified to teach elementary math - especially not the basics. Hire a real tutor, or you will only make things worse for your daughter. Look for a certified teacher in your district.

We pay $50 for 90 minutes (split between 2 kids) and are very happy.
