Back to the question at hand.... in my opinion Brent is the nicest *facility* that I have seen on the Hill. Although I have not been inside Tyler and it was also modernized recently.

13:10, I am the sock-puppet and I agree with you. I belive in what you said too, in regards to the diagnostic and remedial testing. This either you'r e in or you're out way of thinking can be racially divided. Again, there are not enough G&T children in DCPS to fill a classroom of a decent size. You might have a smither here and there but not a true school population. It's not the AA community lack of experience with G&T but it is the "snake-oil" person who's trying make it seem that it is better than slice bread. I feel and I have experienced it first hand, that many school personnel are their own worst enemies when trying to entice AA families into beneficial programs. All of sudden everyone wants to become the Jack Nicholson character in a movie. They want to give you the dialogue of "you want the truth but you can't handle the truth." As a result, all of sudden we are back to square one with the skeptical look at those in charge of the program. If my child gets into a G&T is he/she exceptional or an experiment? Do I disregard the dialogue of honesty from a well respected educator?

I'm an AA Brent parent who grew up in a housing project in another E. Coast city but was lucky enough to attended GT and test-in magnets from 2nd grade up. I went on to an excellent liberal arts college and top MBA program. I earn several times what my non-AA spouse, an NGO worker, does.
I find that those against GT and test-in programs almost always fall into one of two categories. Category A: people who didn't need such programs to attend top colleges, or land good jobs, because they grew up in middle-class enclaves. Category B: people whose children aren't academic enough to qualify, for whatever reasons.
The city's refusal to identify the brightest low-income kids from a young age, or to supoort the advanced work they need to keep up with high-SES peers, is simply criminal. What irks me the most about the set-up is the way white liberals with children in public schools often buy into the paternalistic view that test-in programs are "bad" for low-SES AA kids. Were they bad for Michelle Obama and her brother in Chicago? I also get angry when fellow AA parents reject such programs out of hand, generally due to lack of experience with them.
Well-administred urban GT and test-in programs actively identify low-SES talent young and cultivate it aggressively. If one test had been the sole admissions criterion, I wouldn't have made the grade. But that was far from the case - an interview, a parent interview (yes, my single parent had to demonstrate discipline and committment, too), a series of tests, and teacher recommendations all contributed to my selection as a participant. I'm tired of knee jerk reactions to the concept of selectivity in public schools in this city. As things stand, we'll go private for MS and HS. How will low-SES AA kids benefit? One less high-SES peer and parent role model to be had. Fantastic.

Firstly, I'm not the previous poster, and I don't particularly care who or what Cherita is or isn't.
But I did note that by these notions reinforced at 11:26 et cetera of separating out of biracial people, AAs in million dollar homes and black immigrants "from the social ills", the argument that race is to be equated with social ills cancels itself out. It's NOT about race - and anyone who thinks those AAs in million dollar homes, biracial folks et cetera - people of color with a totally different perspective than what is being expressed by some here - that they are "imaginary" or do not exist or that their perspectives are invalid or otherwise do not count - that is who is living under a rock.
That said, I'm not in favor of test-based admissions but I do believe in diagnostic testing and remedial work where needed. Testing at least establishes where students are lacking and what they need. If for example a 4th grader still cannot read, that's a problem - particularly since so much subsequent school work is based on reading, and that 4th grader needs to do a lot more remedial work in reading to get up to speed. It's a problem that gets amplified more and more with each year that it's let go. But apparently the notion is that we should not do that testing, we should not be honest with ourselves, we should not bother trying to fix the problems, and instead just sweep it all under the rug, and let that student grow up with an ever-increasing sense of low self-esteem because of their poor grades and not being able to keep up, to possibly drop out, to likely never to get a decent job in their lifetime. Set up for failure in 4th grade. One life after another ruined just because some fool wants to blame everything and everyone else, and just sweep the problem under the rug rather than deal with it properly.

What do you have to say about the many many high SES AA families at Brent? I am talking Ivy League, million dollar home-owning AAs. I know them. I am a Brent parent. They want challenge. They want test-in programs for their high performing kids. They are hiring tutors to get the challenge their kids need. Are they "acting white" and therefore don't count?
Also, how do biracial, high-SES parents of high-performing kids fit into your prehistoric world view? Are they "acting white" and therefore don't count? Brent is chock full of these.
So, you feel test-in programs for GT kids are exclusive? What should GT kids do all day? Be bored shitless? Have any enthusiasm for learning they may have be squashed? If you have a GT kid, what do you want for them? How do you feel they should spend their day?

Yes, that prehistoric world view is alive and well, this forum went down that path with the HUMS thread, and yes, they basically said no, high-SES AAs don't count, biracial people don't count, immigrants from Africa do not count, Barack Obama does not count, nor does any person of color who has ever accomplished anything or otherwise made it in life.
And yes, there are definitely some on this forum who absolutely do want to deny opportunity for G&T students.

I'd kill for a test-in MS, like those in other E. Coast cities, because my kid would almost certainly test-in. We've made sure of that at home. Hint: we don't have a TV, hire tutors, and have the integrity and vision not to cry racism when we can't, or won't, compete.
