Just curious, how did you save up the down payment? Did you have $$$ private careers before going into the govt?

Overseas postings. Both career govt-no private career experience.

We are a 15 and an 11 - we live in N. Arlington. We bought our first townhouse - in Fairlington - when we were a 12 and 9, lived there for six years, and were able to use some of the equity of that to buy the current house.

In answer to that, gs15 with student loan1k per month married to gs 13 no loans, we bought 565k house in Arlington, no downpayment with a va loan. We bought in 2010 so prices were high but not at height of bubble. Our mortgage is just under$3,400.00 per month. We have friends who in similar circumstances bought in ash burn, more house, longer commute, slightly lower mortgage. Other friends, same circumstances, 725k house in 2010 same week we did in Arlington. We weren't willing to pay so much due to having 4 parents in late 70s/80s and desire to fund retirement, savings and travel.

mid-range GS-14 and high-range GS-15 salaries, combined total of around $260 or $270. We live in Arlington.

Many of my colleagues live way the heck out in Prince William or Loudon Counties. No way on earth I'd commute that far. Tradeoff is they have massive homes and oftentimes a SAH spouse. And while I'd love to SAH, DH having a 2hr commute each way would mean he never saw our child, so that's a choice I'm not willing to make.

I think the OP is asking where two GS's could buy today on these incomes. The houses people bought before 2004 are not really relevant given today's housing prices.

We make $200,000 and bought a $670,000 house in 2000. Today its worth $1.2 million. I couldn't buy it today.

We are also two GS-15s. We just bought a $850K house in McLean. I was lucky in that my DH bought our first house at the end of 1998 for $245 and we just sold it for $640.

GS-14 and GS-13, both 30, two kids, near downtown Silver Spring

I get that we're never going to make the big bucks, but even both at step 1, we make just under $200k combined. Not bad.
