I agree with your objections to RCC doctrine, particularly wrt gays and abortion. Like you, I'm also totally, absolutely, against any religion that separates into "us" vs. "them," whether it's through communion, or some other rite or way of creating an exclusive membership. The catholic church is not alone in doing this, in fact some other major world religions are equally guilty.

I'm one of those who agrees that it's best to take the whole, not just pieces. That's why I belong to a different church.

FWIW, I also think it's important to respect others' beliefs, even if I disagree with them. And that's why I've been defending catholics here, against what sometimes seems like a whole tribe of mean girls with uniformed, knee-jerk reactions. Please note the difference, though: respecting is not the same as refraining from criticizing. Unfortunately, most of the so-called debate on DCUM is ugly, knee-jerk, mean-girl stuff, not respectful at all.

Thanks for the explanations. You can learn from your less self-aware peers. 1. We agree, totally unrelated rants (e.g. whorehouses) just make you (generically) look insane. 2. Trying to turn every thread into an anti-catholic bullying session makes you (generically) look unbalanced. 3. If you can just let go -- like when you see a poster say something nice about the RCC and you manage to hold back re what you hate about the RCC until you see whether the conversation actually takes off -- then it's probably better for your own health and sanity. Not to mention preventing derailment of a thread that was, after all, about a particular episcopalian church.

I doubt that poster is even Christian - I think she means this to mock all Christians.

I agree, the Christian position is to figure out your beliefs, but avoid denigrating others' beliefs.

I'm the OP and and I am certainly not anti-Catholic. I just could never be one because I feel about the right to choose an abortion--and I do feel that the RCC oppresses women.

Several people suggested OP join the RCC, several others (including myself) said why this was not an option *for them.* There's been some degree of wudeness by the more conservative/traditionalist posters in this thread, but I suppose if you agree with something, extremists that agree with you don't seem as bad.
