A beach house for max $2,000-$3,000 (less if you share, and many are available for $1,500 if you're willing to live a few blocks away from the beach)
vs.
$1,500 * 4 to fly the family out to Vietnam so you can all squeeze into a single $12 a night room at an inn which must have been really off the beaten path (how do you get the family to that inn, and where the heck in rural Vietnam was it?)
I'm not the PP but just for laughs I went on Expedia and priced a ticket for 4 people (2 adults, 2 kids ages 6 and 10) from Washington to San Jose, Costa Rica for a week in mid-April (let's assume spring break is around then). It's $1,700 for all 4 tickets total, on Delta or American with one stop (Atlanta or Miami). I also checked hotels for those dates, and there are plenty of hotels in the $100-150/night range that are major chains like Hampton Inn and Holiday Inn. There are plenty of cheaper options as well.
So it may work out a bit more expensive than the beach trip, but not by a huge amount.
I think Vietnam is a poor comparison if price-conscious because it's just so far, so your airline tickets will be expensive regardless just due to fuel costs.
