Let me tell you my parents live out of the country and when we go visit them and drive through real poor areas where people have dirt floors and no electricity it's not me sitting there commenting to my kids. They are constantly asking questions.

Did your child learn more from seeing that children in India dont have as much as she does, or did you get an opportunity to make statements about how you are giving her such a great world perspective? I ask because depending on age chances are she got NOTHING out of it. Spoken as someone whose parents made me travel.

To me it is about priorities. My child learned more about this world from seeing that children in India don't have the same things in India she does than at the fancy beach house in Delaware or at private school. But we all care about different things.

I just checked expedia for tickets from Washington to Sao Paolo leaving tomorrow. You know, in the summer, when most people can take a week or two off. Because who goes to Brazil for 3 days over Thanksgiving, unless you mean we should pull our kids out of school.
The tickets started at $1,382 per person ($5,500 for a family of 4) and that's with a stop in Miami.

I know of a lawyer family in the metro area who have never traveled outside maryland/Pennsylvania/VA; so it's not likely $ alone...

We have a large family. The logistics of our whole family going abroad are impossible. But I will encourage my children to seek out opportunities for travel when they can.
I feel no sense of loss. Most of humanity lived without extensive travel. What is most important is love, not things or travel. If one is privileged enough to be able to travel, one should use those experiences to make the world a better place, since apparently, the knowledge gained from vacationing around the world is irreplaceable.

Stop being so pretentious. We enjoy Thanksgiving in the USA. I like preparing the turkey etc. I've been to Europe and hope to go the UK within a few years. I have no desire to vacation in Mexico.

Yes. I am the poster who mentioned Vietnam. That would be cost-prohibitive, but Costa Rica wouldn't be. Go during the rainy season (or "green season" as they like to call it.) Stay in a beautiful bungalow with two rooms on the beach with hamcocks. Granted, hot water is hit or miss, and there is no television or radio. But the linens are clean, the food is fresh, the cost for a week is $200, and you kids understand that hotel rooms don't always include things on demand.
I realize I have strayed from the topic at hand, but I do think it is good for kids and parents alike to stretch outside of their comfort zone. The San Jose airport is an education in itself.

Well congratulations Princess. That's $2200 on tickets alone for a family of 4. I don't know about anyone else, but that's about a months worth of living expenses right there.
Yknow. All of you who are saying traveling is SO affordable and makes one SUCH a better person and one can't POSSIBLE get the same experiences from pictures.... It's a damn shame all that globe trotting hasn't taught you graciousness, or humility, or to recognize and be thankful for your good fortune, or to realize that not everyone is as fortunate as you.

$550 to Brazil is a great price. But that means I can't be with my family in the U.S. for Thanksgiving! Your priorities are travel, but my priorities start with family. Not just kids and husband but parents, siblings, etc. They won't always be here. And I would more regret not spending as much time with them as I could than not going to Carnival...I mean...Brazil in Thanksgiving. Which I have always heard is the time to go.
