They should not get a tip for exactly the difference you describe.

Wait-staff as a group are legally paid a lower minimum wage with the expectation of a tip.

Peapod and other such employees are salaried, and should not receive a tip.

Why does this distinction seem beyond the comprehension of most of DCUM?

I never thought to tip. The truck drives up(usually later or earlier than scheduled), my husband and sons bring the bags in from the truck. The driver comes in for a signature and is gone in usually less than 5 minutes.

I tip $5-10. My order amount is usually around $150 +/-

I would never dream of not tipping the driver. My orders are usually pretty big. My rule of thumb is $5 for ever 3 bins (full), if the groceries are being brought into the foyer or kitchen which is just off the foyer. Today I had 15 bins. So the driver received $25. Of course if the driver was rude, I might not be as generous, but I've never encountered a rude Peapod driver. I am disabled, and my youngest son still lives at home. Occasionally, I have had to schedule a delivery when I'm alone. One of the drivers has been to my house several times and was aware that walking is a huge challenge for me. On one of the occasions I had a large amount of frozen foods and it was obvious it wasn't going to fit in my refrigerator/freezer. He asked how I was going to fit it all in. I told him I was keeping the extra items in coolers, hoping it would survive several hours, until my son arrived arrived home and could bring it to the standing freezer in the garage.he asked what items I wanted in there and he helped me find the items in the bags and loaded them them to the garage freezer for me. (Yes, I was his last delivery of the day so it didn't inconvenience any other customers.) Because he went what I would consider above and beyond, he did receive a much bigger tip. Waiters, waitresses, delivery drivers, and other such professions typically don't make huge salaries. If they are friendly, attentive and give great service, they deserve a great tip. A waitress once told me that if ever I receive bad service, do not voice my disproval by not giving a tip because it just makes me look like I was being a cheap jerk. She told me to leave a penny tip because that sends a stronger message. And to be sure to explain to the manager that you left your waitress a penny tip because the server was extremely rude. Additionally, if the food is bad, it's not the servers fault. It's the cook. So leave the traditional tip (for me it's between 15%-20%), and again, alert the manager.

For what it's worth, their online tips are taxed AND Peapod takes 2%.

You're an idiot. ALL taxes are supposed to be tipped - some people who receive tips just break the law and under-report their tips. Same thing in a restaurant if you pay with a credit card, that exact tip is taxed. Cash tips are self-reported, so the person can choose to commit tax fraud and under-report, but the way you pay doesn't make a difference in how things are taxed. It just makes it more traceable.

I live in a 4th-floor walk-up and I consistently get large orders ($150+). I usually meet the driver in the lobby to help carry things and tip $10. The tip is mostly to show that I super appreciate the help getting my groceries from the door of my building to the door of my apartment. If I lived on the first floor, I'd probably tip $5.

$5 regardless of order size/amount (usually I spend at least $100).

Thats the dumbest thing I have ever heard. If you think that, your an idot. So when they fight for more money and the prices go up who ultimately pays for it.

I am happy to pay for what I am getting. What's on my bill is what I'll pay. If I find it too expensive I can go find a cheaper provider. It's not okay to advertise low rates but those low rates are only possible through low wages and in the end the customers are expected to pay more than what they signed up for through tips in order for people to survive. Ridiculous.

Fair wages. Fair prices. Pair competition. Low rates that need to be tipped up are fake advertising.

Anonymous wrote:Driver here.
Reading all this is very intriguing. Its interesting how we as humans justify our social beliefs, an try an understand them when no one knows what there talking about. Or where it originated.

I think before this thread started the question should be asked.

Why do we tip?

Until we understand that question can we truly answer this threads question.

It seems the assumption is payVSlabor.

How much someone makes justifies whether they deserve a tip. Vs how hard a person needs to work for you to justify opening your wallet.

But is it that simple....

I would love for this topic of "why we tip" to be discussed on a grander scale.

Cause think about it.

Everyone has accepted the idea of a waiter or waitress making tips because of there "salary".
Now vs that with labor.

I read people stating that drivers "dont shop the groceries".

Well waiters/waitresses dont cook your food. (The only reason you go to a restaurant)
Sometimes they dont even deliever it to the table.
But we base our tip on there service. (Labor)
Did they bring napkins.
Were they kind.
Did they come back to the table the appropriate amount of times.
Did they bring the check accordingly.
The irony being.
Usually they split a small percentage of there tips with there bus boy. (I bussed tables)
Soo if they provide terrible service that ends up hurting everyone.
Soo now you kind of got to look at it on a larger scale. But then again your assuming all restaurants are equal an have the same mechanics, an they dont!

And to end this example.
With another quote
"If the driver does 8 stops a day".
How many tables do you think your waiter tends too?
At a high end restaurant they may not only make a higher salary.
But there food costs more.
With that 10-15-20% theme that equates to a much more lucrative salary then most would assume.
So after an 8 hour shift of doing multiple tables at once I can promise you there making more then me or most drivers or maybe you the reader.
But... We all still tip.
Thats not even comparing them to bartenders.
Which if you want too do laborVSsalary its crazy considering they stay within a rectangle or square an lift no more then a few lbs an mingle.
And are getting hundreds of tips small an large thoughout the night.

The point im trying to make is.
This topic is silly.
The question is fare.
But the topic is silly.
You never wanna be the person over tipping.
Or being taken advantage of.
And thats understandable.
But clearly if your someone who doesn't want to tip for what ever reason that is. Please dont try justifying it with silly reasoning.
If anything help the driver. Justify it with your own actions.
I dont care if a person was making 200k a year.
Im still going to hold the door for them. Im still going to grab somthing from there hands if they are over loaded.
Once you stop thinking equally of people because you feel there financial situation merits they be treated differently (usually negatively) then your only degrading the evolution of our species an our social growth.
That last part can we worded all kinds of ways an provide a very similar theme.

Soo people.
Ask yourself first.

Why do we tip.

Then ask yourself.

Why am I not tipping.
Or
Why am I tipping.

In the end just do good to others. And the universe will do good back too you.

Good luck everyone!
