What? You're wrong. It's bi-OP-ic

There's a guy I work with that says attribute wrong and noone has corrected him either (although everyone else says it correctly).

He says A-tribute like he's talking about hunger games instead of at-tribute.

Gosh, you're thin-skinned! I can see being a little hurt at the time, but to harp on it to this day?!

I used to work at Panera like 25 years ago, and the word that always tripped people up was "bisque." So many people pronounced it "bis-kay."

I think parental mocking sometimes sneaks into your subconscious in a way it never would from a peer or sibling or stranger.

When I was 12 I told my mom I wanted to live on the lower east side of New York as an adult and she locked me for it ("you don't even know what that is!") and I never forgot it. She made me feel so small and stupid.

*Mocked, not locked

No there are multiple, acceptable, explanations.

Mis-CHIV-is

And Mis-CHEEV-EEE-us

Nope. I remember an elementary school teacher specifically mentioning your second version as wrong. There's nothing in the third syllable to add the EEE sound but it's a common error. Your first example is just weird and I have never heard it pronounced that way.

I was at the library yesterday and wanted to ask where to find John Le Carre (not in mystery section, not in fiction, how they they have zero Le Carre books???) but to be save I looked up the pronunciation on my phone because I've never known what it is.

But it's BI opic and not bi OP ic? I had no idea! So, like biomom? I think the other way sounds better.

It's BIO-pic or BI-O-pic

My mom pronounces “supposedly” as “supposebly” — I corrected her once years ago and she still says it incorrectly. Drives me crazy!

I grew up in Florida. Everyone said "movie thee-yater." I went north to college. They laughed hysterically.

Chia-puss? What word is this supposed to be?

Chiapas is a state in Mexico. At my office, all our printers are named states or countries depending on whether they are a color printer or only b/w. Usually I use Denmark.

I spent most of my life saying "sherbert" for the rainbow-colored fake ice cream until DH pointed out a few years ago that there's no second R on the container. It's sherbet. Which sounds really weird to me.
