I'm a Duke alum. Trying to figure out Rice as I think it could be a great option as well for my child.
In comparing the two states, NC is more purple than Texas, though Houston is definitely very blue. However, Texas state government is trying to impose its crazy on the rest of the state more than what is happening in NC, though it is definitely also happening in NC. But there are some Dems in power in NC which help a bit.
But Texas is just also a lot further away. Harder to visit. Harder to get home for a quick break.
Duke has a contingent of super fratty types, but it is maybe 15%? It has a larger contingent of striver nerds than it used to. Contrary to stereotypes, Duke used to have a lot of very smart but not cutthroat types who liked sports, were social, but not fratty though some were in frats (this describes me and most of my friends). This type has largely been squeezed out by Asians and low income (there were lots of Asians when I was there but they were more assimilated).
Really? Your racism is really showing. Are you indicating the white culture is the superior one so that people need to assimilate? Disgusting!
I’m not PP, but I’ve always understood “assimilate” to refer to joining the culture of the majority. No reference to whether it is superior, inferior, or neutral.
I say this as a Jew whose family assimilated over generations into the majority culture of this country without regard to whether it was “superior”, whatever that means. 🙄
Thank you. Well put. Others are just looking for something to be angry about. Lots of Asians still self-segregate at top colleges. Don't think this is the goal. They are doing no one a favor. Not themselves. Not the rest of the student body.
And again, there are many who don't do this and blend in great. Yet still maintain a pride in their heritage. As they should. But there are too many who don't.

Rice is a tier higher than Emory but a tier lower than Duke.
Says who? Emory is academically better than Rice besides Engineering.

Part of what is pretty unique about Rice is its size. And OP, if your kid likes everything about Rice but Texas, I echo the folks suggesting you visit because Houston is really, really different than any notion of Texas that most people have (or apply and then visit if she gets in).
William and Mary is nothing like Rice. Pomona is nothing like Rice. Rice is primarily known for its STEM majors, not so for the others.
Pomona’s best majors are in Math, Biology, Neuroscinece, Chem… I don’t have experience with these others but you’re gonna need to be a bit more specific by what you mean with STEM.
Not sure what you mean by “best majors” since it’s not a R1. Sophisticated STEM research won’t be available.

For better or worse, there are lots of Asian kids who go to top schools and don't hang out with anyone else. A lot of them look down on the "mediocre" white kids and think that it is not possible that they kids can both be partying and working hard academically (yes, it is possible).
The assimilated Asian kids I referred to were those who went to parties and were not really different non-Asian kids. I'm not saying that they threw away their heritage. They were and should be proud of where they came from. But they could interact seamlessly with anyone.
This is a huge compliment in my book. If you are going to school in America, you should be able to function well in the mainstream culture. You take it as you wish. FFS.
Typical white racist tactics trying to impose a false stereotype that white kids are more intelligent and can deal with academics effortlessly. In reality, it’s actually the opposite and you know it.

And you're an ignorant stereotyping low class MAGA loser.
You went 1/5 (stereotyping). Try again.
