The only county supervisor who pushes back is Herrity. He is an island.
So many County residents willingly roll with the tax increases. It’s out of control
He's an island because he's a Republican. This is why purple areas tend to be the best to live in - when one party (either one!) controls too long with no pushback, bad patterns get entrenched. This is why Rudy Guiliani, before he became a laughingstock, was actually a decent mayor. He came in and undid entrenched bad habits by coming from the other party.
If our whole county government was Republican a lone Dem would look smart too.
Herrity is an island in a sea of insanity. Wish he could replace mckay. He is the only one with a working brain.
Herrity pushed the sole source metro funding for the above ground verses the tunnel. He was the biggest opponent to the tunnel. He doesnt have good ideas. He just knows how to point out bad ones.

However, she would do better if she lobbied her own Board and Superintendent for better choices:
I do realize we need people in the central office. However, the pay for some of these people is exorbitant and some of the jobs are pretty fuzzy.
I would estimate we could save --at a minimum--$10 million on staff at the top--and that is likely not even close to half of what they have. When I taught school, we referred to them as the "people who do lunch." Teachers get so little planning time--and people at headquarters demand things that take up their planning time.
And, remember, it is not just the salaries of the people at the top, but their staffs.
The School Board hired additional --and expensive staff--just this year--you know the same year they are complaining about budget. Not only that, but several of these people are well known political activists. Campaign managers, etc.
With benefits, that has to be at least $2-3 million dollars--maybe more.
Eliminate Instructional coaches. I realize some people think they do great work--but most are unnecessary. I know one who was hired in an elementary school. And, what little experience she had was as a specialist--not a classroom teacher who had experience with IEPs etc.
Cut waaaay back on purchase of tablets, etc. Sure, teachers need to use all tools available, but this is not working for a lot of kids.
Cut out International Baccalaureate. That would be several million dollars more. We all know it is more expensive, but, more important, many of the students in those schools would be much better served by AP. That is a fact.
Move ahead quickly with AAP in all middle schools. That would give great savings in transportation and would also streamline a lot of other issues. It is not just the gas, bus, and drivers, but it is also the scheduling people and the selections above the school level.
Having been a teacher, I know how much growth can occur at the young level in elementary school. I think AAP should be scaled back there. Maybe, eliminate it in third grade and see how that works. It is not the old GT program. Maybe go back to GT centers--scale way back. Big savings there in transportation and staff in HQ and the schools.

Herrity is a smart man.
Do you realize how impractical and ridiculously, obscenely expensive tunnels are?

I do wish she had handled this differently and with dignity. A public Facebook post is messy.
You wish SHE had handled it differently? GtFOH. She handled it appropriately and shed slight on his sexist comment. He's a public servant and so it should have been put out there for all to see.
His response was out of line. Meren has a tendency to post bad information and throw people under the bus in her posts, it is something that you get used to seeing if your follow her newsletter and facebook feed. There is a more professional way to handle her facebook posts, he was wrong to call her a bimbo. She is frustrating to read and I can only imagine how hard she is to work with. Still shouldn't have called her a bimbo.
Do those more professional ways include covering up this behavior? Fairfax women have a right to know if officials are misogynist behind closed doors – – or in group texts — and if “handling it professionally” means keeping it a secret I’m against it.
Anonymous wrote:I am just as troubled by the veiled threats in those text messages as I am by the name calling. McKay is essentially telling Meren that she better fall in line or the school district will get less funding. The public deserves to know that the board of supervisors holds this over the head of School board members for purely political reasons. If we want to know why things are a mess, this is why. The Democratic Party machine is in complete control of who ends up on the school board. I am sure this isn’t the first time a school board member has been threatened to stay on message or risk the loss of funding.

Have you any idea of the time and expense of tunnels?

I dislike McKay very much. Having said that, he is technologically inept as well as idiotic. Having said that, he should have just called her an A##hole..way less controversial than bimbo and we wouldn't be discussing this.
