The average GPA at CNU is about 1200 with an acceptance rate over 80%. If your kid got into UVA, then your kid isn't a big fish in a little pond, your kid is a whale in a fishtank. This does seem a little bit unusual.

NP and I've never been to CNU so I don't know the vibe. My kid decided not to apply to UVA so I shouldn't even be responding. But for this kid here, it could be about fit. My senior will be attending a small OOS school you haven't heard of with a very high acceptance rate. When we were on the tour his junior year, I remember looking at him during the tour and realizing how it was the perfect place and he fit right in. It was like he finally found his people. So who knows, maybe this kid just loved CNU for whatever reason. Some don't care about prestige or rankings.

Not familiar with CNU. Just looked it up, are you referring to Christopher Newport University?

The kids I know who went elsewhere chose UCLA, Michigan and UGA. Fit matters.

THIS is why people think UVA grads are such douches.
That they went to UVA is the first thing you learn about them . . . as if anyone cares.

FYI, my DC turned down a top 15 school in the NE for a small VA school, akin to CNU. Part was costs (we COULD have paid the big bill but DC chose to grad debt free with money for grad school). Part was location. Part was feel of the campus/vibe. On paper, the choice looks crazy but, in reality, it was the perfect decision and DC is thriving.

I didn’t go to UVA and I think choosing CNU over UVA is weird and questionable. It’s the kind of thing people say when their kid didn’t actually get into UVA “oh yeah he just preferred the vastly inferior school, he liked the vibe better.” Uh huh.

I need about 4 hands to count the number of kids who went to "top schools" and who left (several from PENN, Tufts, BU, Boston College, to name a few recent ones). Vibe and fit . . . you can sneer but it does matter.

My child got into a top school in the NE and did not even apply to UVA b/c of the attitude and douche level (my words not DC's) of their grads that she knows (with only a few exceptions).

DP. This is a bizarre take. Lots of Virginia kids apply widely throughout the state just to see where they’ll get in. What they feel/think in November isn’t necessarily what they’ll feel/think when all their options are on the table in April and they have to really think about what it’s actually going to be like at this place or that.
