Both my kids picked our state schools. We have two schools that are similar in rankings. One a city school and the other a rural flagship. They were not the cheapest. But they were the highest ranked for each kid. They both had to initially compromise on their major. Older child was able to switch into is desired major. Younger child will likely not be able to switch to his desired major and will have to do something "business adjacent".
In both cases, they made the logical choice.

We're down to two really similar schools. I think the one in the city he likes more is going to win out. I'm happy about that because they gave us more $$$.

Mine is down to two—a top ranked school and a lower ranked school where he got a full ride and accepted to a special program for a handful of students that serves up opportunities on a platter (rather than having to compete for opportunities at the better school).
He’s also targeting grad/law school and feels strongly that his gpa will be higher at the lower ranked school.
Between these two, he currently has no idea. But we are making progress as he had 5 schools in the running two weeks ago.

Get it. Mine has 2 choices left- declined all others.
He is also on 2 waitlists. These are schools in the top 5 so very unlikely to move. And- I’ve told him these schools would not even go to WL until after May 1, if they ever do at all.
I think deposit will be put down May 1 like older sibling.
Oh- and both my kids changed their minds after admitted day events so I do think they are important. Kids change a lot from spring of Junior year to spring of Senior year and do do their preferences.

My kid picked the school that provided her with the most opportunities: research opportunities in her desired field, multiple opportunities to travel abroad, and a sweet financial package that will finance it.

DD decided on JMU after admitted student day, April 10. She didn't want to apply, missed the EA deadline and wasn't admitted until mid-March.
Up until our visit, it was probably going to be GMU, but after our visit, she knew JMU was the right place for her.
