Well, that’s the thing: It’s planned for a Friday when most kids have tests. If they go, they get 0s, and tests are 70% of their grade. If he gets a zero for this test, he will have a really hard time coming back, and have zero wiggle room.

What really happens is this: sneak over the border, pop out some kids, this entitles you to sign up to every social program (food, housing, medical) that exists, you work under the table and send money abroad (remittances info is readily available). You're a significant drain on all the resources, not only monetary, but also physical (schools, hospitals etc.). What's absurd is that instead of being thankful for all the resources that have been given to you, it's not enough! You want more! Now you have rights to get them! I disagree. I follow a lot of my teen’s friends on IG (only if they follow me first) and many of them post politically minded stories all year. They aware and passionate. So this might just be my kid’s friend group, but I don’t think it’s as uncommon as you think it is.

I think most of the schools in PGCPS had protests this week or will have.
I know that Northwestern, Flowers and High Point had them already and that Largo and ERHS will have one on Friday.

I disagree in part. Teens feel passionate about things. While some of them may be joining to get out of class or out of curiosity, don’t discount the kids who have opinions and want to exercise their ability to protest. The topic doesn’t matter here. A 16 year old is capable of wanting t do these things.

As for being pawns, I also agree in part. But that goes for all of us, not teens specifically.

Really, the point is sacrifice? I thought the point of protests was to call attention to an issue and effect change.
In your bus boycott example, people were protesting something unfair directly related to what they were boycotting (seating on the buses). Are these kids protesting something unfair happening in their high school? That would make sense. But leaving class to protest the federal government doesn’t really make sense.

My DS participated in a walkout recently. It took about an hour and had no impact on his assignments. He’s a good student and it was something he wanted to participate in. I did not think too much about it.

But, it was a lesson on its own that I ultimately thought was valuable. First, there was press. He realized that he didn’t like that at all. None of the published pictures included him but now he knows that this is a possibility and he can choose to avoid it. Second, he thought the walkout was about a narrowly focused topic. That was the messaging. It turned out to be more than he had expected and probably lead by one of those special interest groups that a PP posted up thread. He thought it was a bait and switch.

So sure, that hour didn’t teach him anything academic but it taught him other valuable lessons. I’m fine with the trade off.
