Ethnicity is the biggest indicator of height.

There are very few men and people in general worldwide who are over 6ft tall nevermind the 6'4" to 6'6" that posters regularly claim. Approximately 1% of men are 6’4 or taller. That’s uncommon, but not quite as rare as you’re pretending. The DC greater metro area has approximately 3 million males. 1% of 3 million is 30,000. In this thread there have been, what, maybe 10 people claiming to know someone that tall (and mind you, these tall folk don’t even necessarily have to be from the area!) and many of you are insisting that it’s sTaTiStIcAlLy ImPoSsIbLe!! Are you sure? Because it’s more likely that you’re not good at math.


That means there are almost 3 million males who are under 6’4”.

My family is a mixture of Slavic and Irish so we have a variety. We have one family member over 6’4”, the females are between 5’2” and 5’10”. The other males in the family are between 5’9 and 6’2”.

People talk about height a lot. My son growing up was always in the middle 50% in height. In elementary school there would be a couple of tiny boys and 1 or 2 much taller. The rest would all be indistinguishable from each other, all pretty much the same size.

My oldest measured 6'2" at his 14yo checkup. He looked like Andre the Giant although he had a total baby face. He's now 21 and he's 6'3". His height does not stand out at all.

Agree. Height and age at which growth stops is all over the place for boys.

My Dad, brother, nephews (all over 6 feet) continued to grow until age 21 - 22.

Genetics is weird.


Those were about the heights of my dad and his parents. When my last grandparent died, my parents had been married 25y and my dad finally told my mom he was adopted! It was another 10y before they told me.

That explained it in my family

+1. Hopefully he is popular with the basketball coach instead if he is into sports. He likes basketball and keeps growing have him join the team. There are a lot of basketball scholarships at D3 schools.

I was 5'11 in 10th grade and I was always among the tallest at my HS. 6'0 at 14 is extremely tall. He is probably in the 95th percentile in the US



D3 schools don't give athletic scholarships.

Google the percentage of men who are over 5'11. You will be surprised. Your circle is not a representative sample. But I am sure you know that already.


14% of American men are 6 feet or taller. You must not know very many people if you DON’T know multiple men over 6 feet…

Genetics are odd. A neighbor has three kids two bits 6’4” and 6’2” and the daughter is like 5’4”.

Pictures of my kids (over 6”) next to their shorter father (5’’6”) look pretty funny.

And yes I have teen daughters and I hear how their friends talk. If a boy is 6 foot or taller they go on and on about it


My DS was his 6’5” and built like a man at 14 but had a baby face until 20.

I was surprised by the adult men who would be intimidated by him; it gave me very good insight into the teachers and tema/scout leaders who were super insecure.

That’s highly unusual. I can’t think of a single girl I know who grew like that so it’s probably a specific genetic pattern in your family. Or they had a growth restriction of some kind (when girls quit gymnastics they tend to shoot up bc the sport restricts their height, or they treat a newly discovered health condition - going GF if celiac etc)

There are always going to be outliers but the vast majority of 14 yo girls have no more than an inch if that. Mine also got her period late, 4 months before her 15th birthday and has grown 1 inch.

Also wanted to add that height is often perceived. I have a friend who is 5'8", actually tall for a woman, but she doesn't feel that tall to me, even though she's 5 inches taller than me, and I can see this as she's regularly the same height or taller than men, and frequently is asked to reach things for people. But her height doesn't register to me because I don't find her intimidating, meanwhile I have a coworker who is the same height as I am but she seems taller because I'm a little scared of her.
