Why are you crowdsourcing opinions from randos on a website? This post is literally just asking for vibes.

You sound like someone who has never left the DMV.

Over 100,000 kids annually. I'm very familiar with both campuses and the vibes are very different. Some people would love the strong academics & being close-to-DC (and all that comes with that) kind of environment. Some would love the strong academics in a classic college in the midwest (and all that comes with that).

Besides international affairs, GTown doesn’t have nearly the same reputation as UMich especially among other countries/states. Heck, my son’s buddy (a high stats senior in the DMV area) only heard of the school when my son mentioned the name recently!

Not a big fan of Georgetown (we're an ND family), but this post lacks credibility when they post an article from 2023 about rats (rats are always a problem in urban areas) and clearly lie about someone in DMV never hearing of the school. Someone either got rejected or has some other gripe about the school.

Someone pointed out in a recent thread about seeing 🐀 in broad daylight when doing a campus visit.

As for people in DMV who have never heard of Gtown, you need to get out of your bubble!

Never pay private school tuition to a public unless you have no other good options.
Georgetown is a great option.
Case closed.

I never understand this logic. Just because the state heavily subsidizes to make tuition low for their residents doesn’t mean the quality of education in a state school is not worth the price compared to a private school!

+1. Michigan COA is also about $10k less per year than Georgetown, and $15k+ less than schools like USC and NYU. Not huge money but there is still a discount there.

Georgetown isn't very prestigious. Their endowment is tiny and the buildings are crumbling. Many departments are underfunded and being slashed by the university, which is going broke. Not to mention that the 25% percentile of SAT scores at Georgetown is 1390 and Georgetown underwhelms in anything that isn't Government, Econ, or the majors in SFS. Michigan beats it easily.

+1. Yes to all of this.

Georgetown University’s endowment is significantly smaller than its peer elite, top-20 research institutions, often cited as one of the lowest among top-tier schools. While peer institutions possess endowments in the tens of billions, Georgetown’s endowment was approximately $3.7 billion as of late 2024. In previous assessments, the average top-20 university endowment was over $8 billion larger than Georgetown's. This endowment issue causes serious setbacks in education quality.

As a Gtown grad they're also quite financially irresponsible. That new campus in downtown DC is so ugly and undesirable, and of course, that's where they place their new Public Policy major and school. Nobody wants to live in the Capitol Campus, and Gtown knows that its all a sunk cost and is scared of that. Even the name Capitol Campus, McCort, etc is triggering for me because of how poor a decision it was on their behalf.

I actually don’t mind that campus, but as an adult and if I were attending grad school, not for undergrad.

It's been frustrating trying to get classes and my kid doesn't like being in classes of 100-500, kids interacting only with TAs, etc. The state schools give you the rah rah of sports but you're definitely a cog in a wheel. I'm realizing the benefit of going to a private school. My older kid is at a top20 private and their experience has been very different: small classes off the bat, relationships with professors are easy, etc.

That said, my kids had no interest in Georgetown as they grew up 5 miles from
the campus.

there are only two lecture halls that large at UVA they seat only 400 for intro courses.

Yeah, but DCUMers will never miss a chance to make up their kid’s situation in order to dump on the type of school they don’t like.

Georgetown more prestigious than Michigan? For the Walsh school, ok. Not for anything else.

That's nice to see that Georgetown is getting new buildings. However it's the original campus that needs some work and I see that this Public Policy building is in downtown. That does make sense for facilitating jobs though.

It's kind of an interesting coincidence that the Michigan and Georgetown buildings share an architect. The Michigan buildings are all within easy walking distance of Michigan Union/downtown Ann Arbor. The new dorms are supposed to open this fall.

Troll

I'm not a troll – I'm warning OP about the very real issues that Georgetown is currently facing. Just look up Georgetown's endowment in relation to peer universities: it's tiny in comparison.

You just call anyone trolls when they say something you don't want to hear.

Only a troll would write: “Georgetown isn't very prestigious.”

And +1 his/her own comment.

How do you know it's their own? I disagree with their attention-grabbing statement about Georgetown not being prestigious, but the endowment issue they bring up is relevant.
