We live on a major road downtown (off 14th St) and it has not been plowed yet. In 20+ years in DC, I have never had my street still unplowed the day after a snowfall. It was treacherous to walk the fog this afternoon. And given that the alleys aren’t cleared by the city, I won’t be getting my car out anytime soon! Even if my block got together and hired a plow, there’s nowhere to put the snow on a ten foot wide alley. Ofc I can put my high schooler in an Uber but it’s not so easy for everyone to just clear it and get on the road.

Why is it dumb? In no other country will schools be closed for a week due to one day of snow. I never missed one day of school due to snow growing up. I live in the northern hemisphere of another country.

You are going to be mad come Wednesday. Every side street? lol most neighborhoods have not been touched. It’s compact ice.

No school today and tomorrow makes perfect sense. No school on Wednesday and even beyond is ridiculous. We have never waited for unshoveled sidewalks or all the snow in every small road in every single neighborhood to melt and clear out before resuming school.

It’s getting to the main roads that’s the problem and will remain so. I am guessing Thursday with Wednesday being virtual at most schools.

Seems strange you didn’t have anyone lined up in advance if you are not physically capable and have a kid in school. Sounds unique to me.

We had it cleared late Sunday. I honestly did not expect a solid 2-inch sheet of ice that I couldn’t manage myself, so I didn’t check it early enough in the day today. That’s on me. The folks coming for sure on Wednesday are going to try to get to us Tuesday, but no guarantee. Based on the requests for digging out posted this afternoon on our neighborhood listserve, no, we are not unique.

Teachers aren’t paid well enough for these services so it does no good for families
