Because they couldn't square that with the regency time period. Then she would be a mistress, even if loved, and that's it.

I don't know how you can say this show is not performative box checking, when they are setting up Francesca to fall in love with her husband's FEMALE cousin when in the books it's a male cousin.

That whole thing pisses me off anyway because taking bisexuality out of it-- Francesca is married and shouldn't be crushing on anyone at the moment.

Oh my gosh, I hate this season! Lol! But I am loving hating it.

I know people can't stand Season 2, but that was actually my favorite. Followed by 1. Didn't care for 3. And I think this one is the worst.

The whole mystery of the lady in silver was never ending and stupid. The B storylines don't interest me AT ALL. It also feels very disjointed. I don't feel like I'm ensconced in the business of the ton like I felt I was in the early seasons. We're not in different families households, the promenade, the dressmaker, balls, etc. as much....I like the servant stuff this time- but it was blah, it felt like a worse version of The Gilded Age.

My favorite character by far is Alfie and we haven't seen him lately and not sure we will again. Booo.

Actually the B storyline I was most interested in was Varley's! Glad she left Lady Featherington. She had been so loyal to her. You go girl.

I guess the Mistress comment is in line with the times, but idk, Benedict is usually so kind, it felt weird. Especially since we know well and Mrs. Crabtree confirmed that being a mistress is a bad sort of woman and seen as immoral- like why would he want that for Sophie if he cared for her.

Did they not all live in the country house while the father was alive and the London house where Sophie and her mother lived remained unoccupied. Father probably moved to the country because of the memories of the mother. I remember either Danbury or Dowager Bridgerton saying they knew the first wife. Also if you recall, Sophie was removed from all dance lessons, etc when her father remarried. Her father was the worse to allow the mistreatment of his daughter. That part is not explained.

Just finished episode 4. Goddamn. This is way better than Season 2 or 3. It might even top Season 1. The scene with Benedict and Sophie in the stairwell was so hot…he licked two of his fingers….omg! I need a cold shower. Of course it was totally ruined with the whole “Be my mistress” line.

Violet was a trip with the whole inviting Lady Danbury’s brother over for tea.

Although her actual background is arguably socially worse than her being a maid anyway.

Marginally better than season 3, so on par with season 2.
