Be sure to pay close attention to the RD admission rate at the additional schools you pick. You need some with 70%+ that do not care about demonstrated interest. That is your true safety, and they will likely give you great merit aid.

My kid with similar stats did not because he applied too late in the rolling admissions - WL that never moved. I would not be comfortable sitting where OP is now. I'm glad to hear they are adding more apps.

NP I may have missed this but did OP mention if they are from a top private or magnet public? or from a regular private or public? It makes a big difference from my observation. The GPA means nearly nothing if from an unknown school, AA will assume it's grade inflation when the SAT didn't break 1500 and especially if it's a superscore. From our school which is a legit feeder, kids who have a college list that looks like this have minimum 1520 SAT (need 1550+ for Duke if unhooked) and our CC will insist we have one more safety.

Rice and Duke will be rejections RD or ED. Tufts or UVA may have been fine for ED but now those will also be a no.

Whether this post is a troll or real, it is a good reminder to parents who may have gone through the process during the 90’s that our safeties are generally no longer our kids’ safeties, and that kids can and do get shut out of their top choices, if their lists aren’t balanced.

A couple ideas for schools with February application deadlines that may fit the profile of what he’s looking for include App State in NC and University of New Hampshire. Not perfect matches but options get more limited after January deadlines have passed. Miami University OH is another idea. Pretty sure all of these are due 2/1.

Other likelies with deadlines that have not yet passed: Temple, Rutgers, Indiana, Penn State, Clemson, A&M.

I believe students can appliy to most if not all of these through the common app with no supplementals (or maybe a major-specific one.)

Personally it would be worth the fee to me to avoid the risk of being shut out everywhere in RD. Slim likelihood but possible.

If you are prone to worry, and it sounds like you are, have them apply early in the fall to at least two early rolling schools. It is so much easier to get through the winter if you know you’re in at UMN, or Pitt, or ASU, or MSU, or wherever, and will have not just an option but a genuine choice in the spring.

This. My senior (4.0uw/4.95w MCPS 1540 NMSF low income) has been admitted to Pitt and UMN with merit and honors -- so as eager as they are to hear from targets and reaches, they already have two solid, affordable options where I believe they'd be happy socially and academically.

Especially for the price sensitive among us, I would strongly recommend that junior families identify good-enough programs with <50% acceptance rates (which also, nicely enough, often have rolling admissions.) Visit one if you can. Picture them there. Then pick your hard targets and reaches and focus on those with much less stress.

As others have mentioned, it’s a very reach-heavy list. I’m sure your student will be accepted to Pitt but consider adding one or two last minute safeties for peace of mind.

List is too reach-heavy. Strongly suggest adding some safeties - deadlines are flying by right now, but many colleges will still have their apps open even past the deadlines - you can still submit.

What are the preferences besides prestige? Size, geography, major? Are there any budget issues? State of residence?
