Thank you for this! My kid is a HS senior and interested in majoring in physics. UMD is one of her top choices.

UMD says that undergraduate classes are small for physics:

My DC is a current freshmen at UMD, STEM major, merit scholar, Honors College (in one of the newest dorms - which is so nice and right next to the new dining hall called the Y). First semester was a big adjustment in a lot of different ways - loves the classes and professors, socially it has been much more challenging DC is on the more introverted side.

If you want a Big 10 sports experience, it is disappointing for football and currently basketball. Soccer, baseball, field hockey and lacrosse are terrific. I have 2 students there. Senior and junior. One is an engineer and does Greek. Jr is health science and no Greek. You can’t beat the price if in state.

College Park itself is only okay, but improving. Not charming like Charlottesville but you've got plenty of amenities nearby plus the Metro to D.C. and soon the Purple line.

I would say College Park is finally better than ok.

The opening of two grocery stores within walking distance, together with all the bike/hiker trails and restaurants, new retail (Shop Made in Maryland, Ebidu Life Store, Rally House), plus all the activities organized by the university and city have made College Park, dare I say it, a nice town to live! (even for, gasp, townies).

Speaking of very good food at UMDCP does anyone know whether they still have that white chicken chili or white bean chicken chilli over at the Smith school still? And what day and time during the week they usually have it? I would literally drive over to college park for a cup of that chili

DD remarked when we visited that it was the only tour we'd been were on where the diversity of the tour group seemed to match the school's published stats about the student body.

Wondering also, but it is said that it has a high rate of Black students that go to grad school later to get PHD

UMD is famous for it’s dedication to DEIA, but especially so for driven Black applicants.
