It was a thing when I was growing up. As a child I remember thinking it was because a home was something to be proud of, particularly owning a home. So tours were to share the joy of a home w others / guests.

Be proud ➕ happy that you have such a nice home that your relatives want to tour.

Some people (like me!) love home design and decor and just love touring pretty houses. 🥰

No. It's weird. They are doing it to be nosey. Have they never seen a couch, a bed, a tub, a table, a tv? Nothing new to see here.

My ILs have done this to show us how immaculate their closets are. With exactly 1” between each hanger and 20 white shirts lined up. Bizarre. My MIL also used to count up her Christmas cards while sitting next to me. Just her odd behaviors I guess.

It's anti-social to have people over but not show them your entire home?

I host pretty frequently and am someone who doesn't invite ppl to see every room of my house. Only having to tidy up the relevant floors/spaces is what reduces the burden of hosting and is a reason I am happy to do it pretty often for casual stuff.

If they are staying overnight, yes I show them around so they know where things are and can be semi-self-sufficient. If they are just coming for dinner or a brief visit, nope.

Same. In my house, the main level bathroom isn’t obvious so I need to point it out for first time visitors. I also like to clarify that we have separate trash cans for trash and recycling so I don’t end up with garbage in the recycling can.

It’s the same instinct that makes people want to see open houses or follow reality tv. People are very interested in how others live their lives, especially people they care about.

I absolutely love getting tours of other people's homes. I'm also happy to give a tour of mine. However, the downstairs is the kids' area and it can, at times, be a total disaster- not fit for company, for sure. In those cases, I say, "Downstairs is a mess so we won't go down there today." Simple.
