Please explain this infatuation to a South American who simply doesn’t get it.

Not interested in specifics about how one is played with the hand and the other the foot, just curious what draws these crowds for a sport that spends 85 to 90% of time idle and has a fringe playing time of action.

Plus I see overweight and outright obese children in it just to make a human wall or crash into a running body and I can’t for the life of me understand how that’s supposed to be healthy. Subjecting a child to heart disease and diabetes before they turn 30.

Really curious. TIA!

No athlete plays American football any more.

Some exceptions man. Track star on the football team. Soccer player on the football team. Running backs

This is a good point. Marching bands are so large, you could see half the parents in attendance and know that they are there for their child in the band. Or they could have one in football, one in band, or one in cheerleading. Etc.

Now ask yourself why all those groups are at the football game instead of the soccer game (or any other sport for that matter).

I know many of you are like, "What about Messi? He is small." He is also a world class athlete. Most of our kids, statistically all, are not. You hate it but it's true. Being bigger, stronger and faster in basically every sport gives you an advantage.

For those of you saying NFL players aren't athletic, you have no idea. I worked with a guy who was on the Falcons practice squard for a couple of years, so not even a top player. He was older and not in playing shape and he still could do things athletically we all wish we, or our kids, wish we could do.

As for why some of you insist you prefer soccer uber alles, I'm convinced it's because you find it easier to dad or mom coach. In football you are separated from the field too much. You can't give your kid your "expert" advice as easily.

When you can show me an offensive or defensive lineman who can run, sprint, jump, change directions quickly while executing technical skills for 90 minutes, then we can compare football to soccer overall athletic qualities

Bigger faster stronger has limited applications in sports requiring highly technical skills and high IQ

LOL, the impressive stats from the NFL combine would argue differently

That's the real difference though, if you are taller/larger and athletic you can start playing football in your teens and become extremely successful. Soccer you really need to start at a younger age.

Basketball is also THE most profitable sport for many high schools and colleges. It's also the most competitive to make a roster at a good school. That's because, compared to football, there are fewer players, very little overhead costs, very little coaching staff, and way more games played per season.

My brother-in law is an AD in LCPS. Has anyone on here has ever looked into how sport programs are funded in public high schools in this area? In most of the counties (LCPS, FCPS, ACPS, PWCS), football funds ALL the other sports at the school (besides boys basketball at a few select schools) through ticket sales and concessions. There would be no high school soccer if there wasn't football.

Football Events are very popular for a large part of the population
No disputing that

Football the game itself, not so much

Facts and statistics easily disprove this opinion, but go on queen...

Every program in FCPS, ACHS, and the majority of LCPS and PWCS have 3 levels of football high school football. 7on7 and flag teams are more popular than ever. Two “schools” opened just last year (Loudoun Sports Academy & St. James Academy) practically just for football. There is no shortage of popularity in the game itself.

How much 7v7 and flag football is being played by kids all over Virginia on the weekends compared to soccer?

What point are you actually trying to make here? That soccer is more popular than football? More kids play organized soccer but I’m not sure how that matters. What matters is how many watch because that’s where the money comes from. The money from NFL, college, even high school football dwarfs all the other sports and it isn’t even close.

The response was to the person who said football is more popular with kids

Literally no one said "football is more popular with kids". Reading comprehension is important when trying to engage in dialogue, at least if you want to appear intelligent.

But football is more popular than soccer with kids. It’s what they watch, talk about, wear, play fantasy leagues. Even most of the kids who play travel soccer would tell you their favorite sport is football. Soccer is just an activity their parents signed them up for.

You live in Nebraska?

I don't see more kids wearing football jerseys over soccer jerseys around the dmv

Add to that, the kids in general are now more into hoodies and current trends designer name brands

Typical DMV parent response since the world does revolve around those living here in their bubble.

Where in the DMV do you live? You must not get out much. Walk into any Dicks and see how many soccer jerseys are for sale compared to other sports. You think stores would stock what doesn’t sell?

Why don't the parents sign them up for football?

Because it’s more dangerous and I know they aren’t going to be good enough to make a living from it. Soccer is a lot more convenient as an activity. There are teams available no matter the level, fun tournaments, near year round leagues. Football is still their favorite.

I loved playing soccer as a kid, when I hit 8th grade my parents demanded I play football which I did on and off throughout high school. Never loved it thats for sure.

With my own kids, one picked up soccer and it reignited my love of the game. Soccer is culturally more and more ingrained and the WC this summer will push it a bit more.

There's no danger to football though, so firmly entrenched in the popular mindset.
