And yet folks were flipping out that MCPS dare to have school this year on 12/23 which is definitely not a holiday of any sort.
But anyway because so much of the world likes to be off around then, they just want to be on the same page. If places didn't break around Christmas it could simply be 1/2 day 12/24 12/25 off maybe 12/26 off since that was on a Friday. The big effect is "New Year" coming a week later. If they weren't so close together Christmas break would be simular to Thanksgiving.
We absolutely should get Festivus off every year. I start cleaning my pole on the 22nd.

They should use this day either on the day after President's Day or April 23. Spring break is the only thing after winter break that is longer than a 3-day weekend.

Right. So Diwali is an evening holiday but we will have the day off that day for reasons unknown. Rosh Hashanah begins the evening of September 11th which begins being celebrated on Friday night. We typically have the following day off, as the holiday continues to be observed the following day during the daytime, which this year happens on a Saturday.

Every Catholic Church has a 4 or 4:30 vigil mass. Half day on Xmas Eve wouldn't be the worst thing though.
