For instance, Sarah texts our group of 7 women suggesting a friend dinner. Everyone agrees on 7pm on December 5th. Then a bunch of restaurants get suggested, including a seafood restaurant. You are allergic to shellfish and don't care for fish.

Do you just decline the get together or do you eat a huge lunch and then just get drinks or a small salad?

Are you right to be put off by this when everyone knows your allergy?

I'm trying real hard to not be offended here.

A bunch got SUGGESTED including ONE seafood restaurant?!

OP you got miffed before any was even selected and if you didn't immediately say NOT SEAFOOD PLEASE I AM ALLERGIC then how tf are they supposed to remember not to pick that one.

If you CLAMMED UP cuz your panty knot was too tight to text, then it's all on you.

Oh btw what if they picked Outback Steakhouse or Morton's and somebody ordered seafood?

I see what you did there.

There are so many food intolerances these days it's hard to remember and plan around. If you can find SOMETHING at the restaurant to eat, go and be quiet about it. Don't be that person. I have a lot of tolerance for people with something like celiac. You don't like fish? Get over yourself.

This is an allergy not intolerance. It could kill them.

Right? I can list with perfect accuracy all of not only my friend's allergies but also their preferences. Anyone claiming they don't know their friend swells up like a balloon any time they eat shrimp or nuts is a shitty friend?

So don't order shrimp? Order the chicken, steak, wedge salad, or pork chop. This is so easy to navigate.

At the seafood restaurant? Unlikely there will be that many options.

What seafood restaurant doesn’t have chicken?

AND steak AND pork chop? No.

Even OP poses the question as a restaurant not liked, WWYD? Not one that "will definitely KILL" her. So people are responding as if they just don't like the choice since that was the question because this isn't a life or death choice.

I do not care fur seafood but most restaurants have a few other options. I would likely go. If it become a regular destination, I.mighy suggest an alternative at some point

OP here. I didn't reply at all because I don't want to make this about me. But Sarah knows my allergy and has seen me have an allergic reaction to a crab dip (thought it was artichoke dip) at a wedding a few years ago. I had to take a benadryl and go home.

I just would never suggest a place that I knew wouldn't work for someone. It seems deliberate.

Ridiculous main character syndrome here thinking it is deliberate. Several years ago you had to take a Bendryl? Yeah, people won't remember that. You weren't airlifted out by helo to save your life from airborne exposure to save your life or even need an epipen. Drama queen. Order something else.

Proof of shitty people in the world, OP. I agree it's deliberate if she saw you leave an event with a reaction two summers ago. If she can't remember that she either is a drunk/druggie or has a TBI.

This is clearly Main Character OP replying pretending to be someone else.

Im a DP and Jeff can verify. Do you routinely forget about friends having such a violent allergic reaction that they need to take medicine and leave events? Do you have a TBI? Dementia?

I was at a party 10 years ago and the cat brushed up against me and my face swelled up. I had to leave and take a Benadryl. Should everyone remember that forever?!

Apparently yes or they are terrible friends or demented.

I'm vegetarian, so most restaurant menus are limited for me. I still manage to find something and enjoy the company. Those kinds of dinners are less about food and more about the company.

Neither OP nor the allergy alarmists want to address what happens when they go to another restaurant and shellfish are ordered and consumed. And prepared in the same kitchen. If that's not a problem then why is the seafood restaurant? OP only had a mild issue once when she ate crab dip unknowingly.

You go because it’s not about an amazing dining experience, it’s about being with your friends. You can have everything in your life just as you want it but you can’t also have friends and family then or you can have friends and family and make compromises.

I have never once in my 56 years on this planet been to a seafood restaurant that didn't offer at least a token non-seafood option.

+1 Even at serious seafood restaurants there’s always a section of the menu that’s designated that way. Cheesy places will call it “For Land Lubbers” or similar.

Are you crazy? I have such an allergy and I take a Benadryl and consider it extremely mild. OP is using this as some kind of friendship test.

I’m sorry, but you have some ignorance on the subject. Some people are so allergic to shellfish that they can’t have any food cooked on the same area. Some people can’t even go to the beach because the sand irritates their skin. I know that sounds insane, but it’s true. Typically restaurants can assure you there will not be cross contamination but for a seafood restaurant like legal seafood they don’t typically have a separate area for cooking meat because that’s not their specialty.

But those people aren't OP. Who once took a Benadryl and went home early. Have you read the thread? We don't need an allergy lesson.
