No point obsessing about it as a junior. It generally works out from private feeder high schools with these stats.

Test optional (last cycle)
Humanities major w/massive EC alignment
Great LOR

Kid really lucked out

Outright rejected at another 3 Ivies (not HYP--didn't apply to these) and about another 4 top 20s.
Know many classmates with similar stats who didn't get into any top20s It's really luck of the draw at this GPA from top DC privates. You can luck out or get shut out.

I know some kids who really get shut out with 3.8 or even 3.85. Infact my kids friend had a 3.89 at a top private school but applied for a STEM major. He only got into a top UC in his applications to top 20. His SAT was 1550+.

Yeah, rigor is not there. A 3.89 from non-rigor courses is viewed differently from a lower gpa from high rigor courses, even in 3.7 range.
It's not just numbers, it's rigor/gpa/test score. Got to be strong in all three to make the academic cut.

I think it is the major choice supported with relevant EC that is most important. This kid had high STEM rigor.

Both can be true. Agree if applying to a high competitative major, the bar is higher.

We also have 4.0 from our private school with low rigor, ended up at two Top UCs. Non-stem major.

Yes - major is way more important than people think. Especially in regular decision. And the alignment must be there.

Numbers game. No one expect they get admitted to all T20s.
