Ah, I can tell you've never worked jobs paying under $20/hour. The vast, vast majority give you just under the number of hours that would trigger your state's requirement to offer benefits. Starbucks may be a rare exception if they offer to *all* part-time employees, but how many people do you think they can employ?

Starbucks requires 20 hours per week, which is better than the usual 30 hour requirement:

To continue eligibility, you must have at least 520 total hours on paychecks received between the first and last days in each six-month measurement period, for semi-annual audits on January 6 and July 6.

People in ACA generally ALREADY have a job (Walmart tells workers how to apply to Medicaid), just without benefits. So they would need to tack on another 20 hours per week and actually get it.

I'm the PP you're responding to. I worked in MA as a new grad in the 2008 recession, where the state requirement was also 20 hours. I had three jobs. One scheduled me for exactly 19 hours a week. One was for 18. The third varied each week but never exceeded 19 (and I ended up quitting because I couldn't manage the unpredictable conflicts with the other two jobs). NONE offered insurance. That's how this works.

That's why this "proposal" is a trap. A trap for squeezed feds who will exchange a paycheck now for layoffs later. All while redirecting anger at the republicans over not extending ACA toward anger at the democrats for caring more about feds than Snap recipients- who btw are the same working class people.

Whatever layoffs they are planning to do are going to happen regardless of when feds end up getting paid so they might as well pay us now.
There are thousands of additional non-essential feds who will their jobs if this "proposal" becomes law.

+1
Try getting enough hours for those benefits.

At this point I am concerned not feeding people is the point. If people aren't able to feed their families they have to resort to asking for money from family members if they have no savings or run up credit cards. Once that solution is not available and there are no local food banks- what options do they have? Is this administration looking forward to looting and uprising by hordes of people who can't provide basic necessities for food and housing on a large scale? What could happen that might play into their hands for a reason to have military presence?

Nearly everyone getting these subsidies already has a job. You need income over the Medicaid thresholds to be eligible for the ACA in the first place.

“Starbucks is taking “significant action” to turn around its struggling business, closing a large number of cafés and announcing a second round of layoffs at its headquarters as part of CEO Brian Niccol’s efforts to resuscitate the troubled chain.”
