Teacher here— Parents one thing to know is that teachers are also actively helping your kids by reviewing and providing feedback on college essays, helping them understand what the common app is asking for in varying sections, etc because they don’t want to ask their parents when they “freak out over everything” or “are always on them about college apps.” I don’t ChatGPT my rec letters- they are personal and discuss what my students are like in the classroom, what wonderful human beings I think they are, and how much potential I see in them. I have to cap my rec letters at 15 because one year I took multiple days of leave to write the 30 I had agreed to. This year the deadlines have gotten even earlier for colleges and align with end of the quarter grades being due, parent teacher conferences and our private school’s open house. Oh, and my own college kids’ fall breaks, too. I tell my students that I can see exactly how many teachers they have requested for recs in Naviance and won’t write them if I see more than two, but some have still requested recs from upwards of 5 or 6 of my colleagues. So please, show grace to these human beings who give so much of themselves to your kids and the greater community. As a parent of college kids who just went through the process, I understand the stress your children are under, but everything really will be okay— they will go to great schools and go on to do amazing things.

Wow, don't you people who are lying to teachers about deadlines and threatening them realize that you are doing the exact OPPOSITE of what you should? What do you think the teacher is going to write about your child if they are being untruthful (they can see the deadlines on the common app!) and rude right as the teacher is writing their rec??? Writing a recommendation does not mean it will be complimentary to the student. The teacher can and will be influenced by how your student conducts themselves in this process.

And I hope to god those of you flaming teachers are getting them a very nice thank you once the process is all over. It is not an f-ing right to get a recommendation.
