Just be aware that it’s humid and hot af in St. Louis for most of the year outside like nov-apr. I liked living there but you will not avoid humidity in the Midwest unless you go upper Midwest

I second this....

an example Brighton https://www.redfin.com/NY/Rochester/48-Willowdale-Dr-14618/home/79410379. There's multiple towns with areas with stores to walk to - Brighton, Pittsford, fairport, etc. much easier quality of living than here.

if you want to be in the city rather than the suburbs this is cute https://www.redfin.com/NY/Rochester/59-Rowley-St-14607/home/72502336

The taxes in Rochester are shockingly high. My cousin just moved from Pittsford to a new state due to the high taxes.

They are high.... but can afford a house in cash for the price of my bethesda split level down-payment in 2020...

Brighton and pittsford both have excellent schools

You don’t sound like you are OP however.

WSJ identified upstate NY as one place where taxes plus insurance are now higher than the mortgage payment for most places.

Something to consider when picking a location.

Real estate in Cleveland Heights OH is insanely cheap and really nice if you like older homes with nice craftsmanship. The Cleveland Metroparks are pretty good for long dog walks (I did a lot a marathon training on Metropark trails). Taxes are high, so check that. N

There's a decent number of homes in and around Indianapolis that fit your needs. Here's an example:
