It sounds like you dislike show-offs. I mean, I am not posting anything in my home on social media and you have no idea what I may or may not hyper consume. I know someone who decorates for each holiday and posts on social media about it, but what you wouldn't know unless you looked closely is that she reuses the same decorations each year.

I really hate Trump but if his dumb tariffs can make this plastic crap unaffordable, that would be one good thing. Stuff is just too cheap. Our grandparents would buy a couple things and pack them up carefully and save them for decades and the. Maybe make other decorations from upcycled things (a scarecrow with old ripped clotthes, jack o lantern from the pumpkin used to make a pie, perforated tin can lights for the driveway). We throw out so much stuff hecause stuff is so cheap, really too cheap because the real costs are all externalities.

OP is describing a typical suburban mom in America.

I agree and I don't agree.

I'm repulsed by and also have a tendency toward overconsumption at times. I hate "stuff" for myself, but I do love going all out on a good theme. Holidays are way overhyped but sure, I love winter light decorations and nothing beats our neighborhood at halloween. The reusability probably pales in comparison to plastic bottle usage.

Now, I hate the family photo shoots. I'm glad it's a sort of employment act of sorts for photographers. But I find the posed holiday cards completely ridiculous. They go straight from my mailbox to the trash. I've never made them and I feel lacking because I've never made them.

Something out there makes us feel adequate or inadequate.

Somehow I don’t think op is maintaining an accurate inventory spreadsheet of her neighbors’ giant inflatable spiders and their age. She’s just stewing in righteous disdain for them (yet i bet she flies for vacation on the regular!)

My family watched ET together around Halloween last year.
In the movie, the characters decorated the day of.

I remember this in real life. I remember holiday seasons used to be shorter. It was possibly **just** the holiday. I was born in 84. I think we carved a pumpkin the week of. We put together our porch the day before.

It adds so much more stress to put up enough decorations that it takes a project management chart (lol) and weeks ahead. Meaning, it’s so much stuff that it would be a shame to put it up for only a few days.

+1. We have a few inflatables in our yard, which my kids love. But we've only purchased one every 2-3 years since having kids. They all get reused annually and we've even made repairs instead of tossing broken ones. It's a small amount of stuff for a big impact.
