I don’t participate in any meal trains and I’m sick of the collections at work. If I know someone personally, I give money or a gift card if requested. Work has gotten out of control with blast emails to everyone with these sort of requests for people we barely know. Politics have nothing to do with my feelings on this.

Meal trains are just a nice thing to do to show someone you care about them, like eating grocery store birthday cake on your coworkers birthday, signing get well cards when they need surgery, contributing to a flower fund if they have a death in their family, buying Girl Scout cookies that their daughter is selling, asking if they had a good vacation, etc. You’re not obligated to do those type of things, but it’s a nice gesture to participate. A significant portion of waking hours are spent on the job and while it’s probably not the big, happy family that management may like to portray, it helps if there is some sort of community and cordial working relationships.

A meal train doesn’t have anything to do with how they “manage all those kids”. However large your office is, I don’t think anyone expects the meal train to last for 18 years. Your participation aside, the meal train’s effect on how they manage all those kids is negligible. Moreover, I think the meal train was most likely someone else’s idea and not something the family is dependent on. I’m sure they’ve made plans to feed all those children, regardless.

Their religion and politics is immaterial. Nobody is suggesting you convert to Catholicism or buy a red baseball cap and vote Republican. If you object to kids in general, someone having 5 kids, or this specific couple having kids at all, then, by all means, don’t participate (see above). Otherwise, participation just means that you recognize they consider a new child to be good news and you want to celebrate their good news with them.
