Trends come and go.

My parents tried to convince me not to get a high school ring in the 1980s, so I got the cheapest one and then never wore it after freshman year of college. Wear my college signet ring every day though.

I can see why letterman jackets and high school rings are fading, they are now expensive and usually rarely after your late teens / early twenties.

In schools/areas where the vast majority of kids go on to college, no one is going to wear their high school stuff after they graduate. The only exception is private schools with strong alumni networks — kids will often wear those class rings well into adulthood.

Fewer kids are going to college now. But on the other hand, high school is a lot easier than it once was, and even more socially atomized.

"I am in the population that could be bothered to spend a week or two doing fake online credit recovery" doesn't really seem worth a ring.

I have wrestling, band, cheer, softball, swim jackets/coats all hanging in our closet that my now college aged kids aren't ready to part with. I'm happy their HS letters are just in the top drawer of their dressers.

But the letter jacket would have taken the place of all of these.

But it doesn't differentiate the football team from the wrestling team, etc. All of those other jackets are considered uniform items for being on the team.

Midwest also and graduated 2006. We all wore them and so did every surrounding city we played.
