After taking the SAT twice my kid had a 1490 superscore, which her dad and I thought was great. So she went and signed herself up for a third SAT using her own money, worked out her own prep schedule, and got herself over the line. And that is a relatively sane story. She has a friends who have taken the test 5 and 9 (!) times, respectively, trying to get over 1500. Not because any adult tells them they need a score over 1500, but because in a holistic admissions environment where there are no clear rules or standards, the kids have gone and made one up.
People on this board like to think of DCUM parents as pushy and tigerish. But often times it's the kid's environment -- peer group, school culture -- that drives them towards a pursuit of better grade/score/ECs.
