Visceral ick in this context is just pure human nature and instincts. Every potential mate in your life for 3 or 4 decades has discarded you, deemed you unworthy of pairing with and procreating with. Alllllll of them were wrong? Nah.

The divorce rates are ludicrous these days in the USA, especially by women under 50 who have young kids.
They need to get their act together and learn how to be married, rather than running away as a default.
Once a woman has divorced or ran away from a marriage, they are statistically much more likely to do it again, and again.

I'm an early empty nester at 47 and tried to date some never married childless men. They were all incredibly selfish and set in their ways; poor communicators and never compromised. I don't know maybe OP is different but that was just my experience

The choices and opportunities in our 20s were bountiful. It’s a sign of relational defaults of some kind if you haven’t at least been engaged at some point in 20s and 30s. Next issue is then lack of experience living with someone, not having to compromise, and lastly if no kids, not having had responsibilities and understanding what it means to have a child and that love towards them. There’s going to be a lot of selfishness.

In my country we call anyone unmarried or at least not engaged to be married past year 30 a leftover. In the West maybe you get a few more years, so let’s say past year 35 makes you a leftover in America.

Ok, I’ll admit it. Not married/no significant relationships/no kids in your 40s is a red flag for me. If for no other reason than this person has not had to compromise for anyone as an adult. It’s very hard to do when you haven’t had to. I wouldn’t stop dating them, but I would be watching for that. If they have a good reason (illness etc as above), that’s a different story.

DP. No way. This exact thing happened with my uncle. He had an organ transplant and had to make some life style changes and his much younger wife peaced out. She won’t divorce him for financial reasons (he’s retired and she actually makes a decent income so concerned with potential alimony) but lives her life as a single woman. She occasional pops up to pretend to want him back to get him to sign this or that and he falls for it every time. No fool like an old fool.
Oh, exact same story in my circle ! They are not married though but have a child. She lives mostly separately but pops up when she needs money
