Some (many?) of the citizens of Dcumlandia have very specific opinions about travel (coupled with a compulsion to “win” so they’ve made travel a competition).

There are certain destinations that immediately prompt derision: cruises, Disney, a combined weeklong trip to London and Paris, and anywhere in Florida or a red state unless you are doing to a pricey spa or dude ranch.

Once upon a time, Iceland wasn’t popular. Then it became cool, and then it became popular, and then it became a joke on Dcum. Costa Rica is now trending in that direction.

You see, most people went to more mainstream (read: developed) Caribbean or similar destinations until CR became “hot.” It definitely wasn’t for the beaches (which, less face it, aren’t the best). But the jungle views, hiking (what is it with white people and hiking btw?), etc. made the vacation pics and stories sound “amazing,” propelling CR into a new level of popularity.

But as we know, once “everyone” starts visiting a spot, then it’s no longer “special.” (Whatever)

ICYMI: Italy and Greece are for lazy people who aren’t real travelers (per dcum critics). Apparently, you need to vacation in third world countries or risk your life in dangerous places to have any credibility as a well-traveled person.

There is a lack of a specific style or signature dish, that is true. but you can have some great meals if you stick to fish and seafood, most of which is caught day of. That’s the one thing they have mastered there.

It's more than just mentions. It's context. Allow me to explain.

Consider this recent exchange as an example:

Loved Chicago, now where?

We took a trip with extended family to Chicago with several college-aged/young adult kids. They absolutely loved it. Where should we go next year? If they loved Chicago, what else might they like? Can be out of the country.

I think they really liked Chicago because they just had lots of quirky and unique things to do. They loved The Second City, mob tour, architectural tour, comparing pizza. They also liked seeing some iconic things like Wrigley Field and taking the L.

Many, many respondents provided urban destinations germain to the features they enjoyed about Chicago. (New York, London, Boston, Paris, ... ).


Now this respondent understood the task - they provided several cities germain to Chicago. But DCUM Costa Rica obsession mandates that Costa Rica must be mentioned.

Abroad, I'm going to put forth Beijing (I used to Shanghai more but in the last couple years, Beijing I find has really improved and you get the Great Wall access from there). I love Mexico City. Paris always - I feel very similar to Chicago in that it's more than just Notre Dame, Louve, Eiffel that gets me but the neighborhoods are deeply interesting. You get that with Tokyo and HK too. I love Rome and London but not as much in terms of a family holiday than to Mexico City, Paris and Tokyo/HK. Costa Rica is a country that's very dear to my heart as well - for the simple reason that there's like 100 activities you can do around the country.

So, yes. Many DCUMers are obsessed with Costa Rica. Great. You do you. But you're not paying attention if you are denying it's a thing.

I mean you say many many people provided cities, and then you quote one person who apparently provided a bunch of cities both here and abroad and then threw in a sentence saying they like CR. I'm not really sure that proves your point that "many DCUMers are obsessed" but it's not really worth going back and forth.
