Solid school, making wise decision by closing a number of satellite campuses. Mishandled Sandusky issue and continues to pay the price for that mistake.

Bloomington is also small and in the middle of nowhere.
We are from PA. My oldest son had no interest in Penn State because it is in the middle of nowhere. We probably should have had him apply but we didn't. He is thrilled to be going to Pitt in the Fall. Kid 2 wants to go to PSU. They are so similar yet so different.
Similar but opposite. My oldest is at Penn State, I think my youngest will end up at Pitt. I’m also in Pennsylvania.

Most OOS kids aiming for PSU probably can’t get into those two, especially UVA.
One might choose PSU over UVA if they were interested in certain types of engineering or engineering in general. Like VT, Penn State students seem very happy. In our group we don't know any Penn State students that are unhappy with PSU but we know several that don't like UVA for whatever reason. Clearly not scientific study...
Possibly, but if the kid had the stats to get into UVA they could go to a better engineering school. I’m not bashing PSU, it’s just that the student qualifications between PSU admits and UVA admits are very different.
Probably one of the higher ranked public engineering programs such as Illinois, Purdue and maybe Michigan would be a possibility for a UVA admit but the private colleges ranked better than Penn State are MIT, Stanford, Caltech, CMU, Cornell and Johns Hopkins. None an easy admit. None of the publics outside of the top 10 would be an upgrade.
