Mine did the bare minimum after scoring 36 on the ACT. You would think that means he has his act together…..absolutely not. It was a complete disaster getting him to work with this counselor, write essays, etc.
Kid was a 3.9 UW with at 36 ACT in one seating. But zero motivation to apply to college.
My husband and I basically edited every single one of his essays.

Agree with this. It's all anyone talks about at summer dinner parties or at our country club. Everyone is in the thick of it right now. If you aren't, your kid is at a disadvantage compared to their peers (whose parents are micromanaging everything).
Now, if that isn't your circle or HS, count your lucky stars.
This isn’t true for my dc. Started app in fall (knew where he would apply in summer) and submitted on own w help of school largely. Large W school w more than 500 on graduating class. I didn’t even read an essay or anything before submission. Would have edited some and he still was accepted. Not top schools in country and fits him it seems.

Same. And my oldest got into many T10s/20s and didn’t start until much later. He did 90% of the applications the last 2 weeks of December.

With my kids, it’s too early. They had an EA that didn’t let them apply to any other privates early- so that left UVA for EA zero interest in any out of state publics. Many were completed over winter break for the Jan 1-5 deadlines. These later applications were a lot better than the ones prepared earlier.

This. My DS has been working with a paid consultant for a year now. He has been doing all the work himself with guidance from parents and the consultant team. He is a great writer. He is not using AI at all.
