The use of that comma at the end used to be the way they did it. I’m old school.

Except when teachers were tied up retesting kids with 75-89%. My sped kid gave up on getting remedial help. The process was too bogged down.

It’s because the students aren’t learning from their mistakes. They don’t know what their mistakes are in order to correct them. This has been a chronic problem over the years as everything has moved to be electronic. The tests vanish and kids don’t even know what they missed. The check-in, exit tickets, etc. are done on the computer with no corrections. Well that is ridiculously stupid. HW is for practice. It SHOULD be graded for completeness not correctness. That other approach makes zero sense.

In the past decade with kids at FCPS, more than 95% of the assignments were auto-graded by the computer. My homework will count as 1 point. A classwork activity I can monitor and keep computers and phones away will be 10. A quiz will be 40. In a unit with 100 points of formative work, less than 10 will be from HW. If they want to cheat on 10% of 30% of their grade (3% overall), so be it. The other 97% of their grade will suffer if they don’t take it seriously.
I am going to use HW as a tool to teach practice for the sake of practice, not gaining points.
I will make HW completion a mandatory checkbox to take any retakes though. Missing it? No retake until it’s all done.
The rough part is going to be grading it. We have been told we cannot grade for completeness, only correctness, and grading an average of 75 HW assignments for accuracy every day isn’t realistic. That makes me want to go to whatever computer program they eventually contract for us, which the kids will probably hate.

That is a long time to keep just averaging tests together. There’s no clean slate at the end of a quarter or end of a semester. A rolling gradebook is 1 year long gradebook. I just keep adding to the same spreadsheet all year. Quarter grades are just progress reports. There is no averaging at the end (unless you have a separate weighted final exam).
Proponents like that it is fairer in that every test is equally weighted (vs. a quarter that might have 1 or 2 or 3 tests, making them worth different percents), and better for the kids because there are no surprises at the end. They know exactly what they have going into the final exam. It is easier for teachers in that we can give exams the last week of the quarter and not worry about squeezing in retakes before the gradebook closes, as I can edit the Q1 test score in Q2 (or even in June) since it's all one sheet.
Critics don't like that it because a child who does poorly at the beginning of the year has to look at those poor grades all year--they don't "disappear" in a Q1 gradebook that they can forget about. They don't like that in June a 10 point assignment doesn't change the overall grade more than 0.1% because there are 1000 points in the gradebook by this time.

Meaning there doesn't need to be homework every day? If so, I agree.
But for English and History, at the middle & high school level, at least 30 pages of outside of class reading per week is a reasonable and necessary expectation.

They can learn from even copying English sentences. Lots of things are learned by the process of copying. Couldn’t we say the same for other subjects?
Math - you either know it or you don’t when it comes to test time. If you’re not doing your own math problems at home, it will be obvious on a test if you can’t do them then. With English, not so much. You could easily receive help or have someone edit or write your assignment at home and the teacher would never know.
