I am pretty sure in this hypothetical the alternative is the husband not traveling for work.
I get that not everyone has a choice but OP has a choice.

I mean, you just do it and get on with it. My husband has always travelled a ton and we’ve always managed. What’s the alternative?

You just do it. Honestly, the weeknights are easier than the weekends and the toddler years are easier than the tween years here. Back then, by 7:30, the rest of the night was mine. They're 10 and 12 now and the night isn't my own until 9pm - and I'm running them around in the evenings as well.
This was my experience as well. I found it much easier when the kids were younger when my DH traveled. As they got older they had more activities and commitments which created more schedule challenges. When they were little I could dictate the evening routine and had some quiet time after they went to bed.
