Are none of you people lawyers? The confessional privilege has long been recognized as an evidentiary privilege in American law, like attorney client privilege. Plus under the first amendment separation of church and state a court could not compel a priest to break the confessional seal. But if a priest leans of child abusr a different way — eg he witnesses someone engaged in child abuse or a third party informs him of it or the child informs him of it—none of that is covered by the confessional seal and absolutely should be reported. This is really not hard and not a big deal at all. (Honestly if they aren’t teaching this stuff at Ave Maria law school…..you should’ve saved your money for Georgetown or BC!).

Cradle Catholic here - the picture is in bad taste, period, but I agree with PPs that many of Trump's policies are truly what I as a Catholic abhor. And for the 12:08 PP - I am liberal, was appalled by the Kavanaugh attack, and yet think there should be separation of church and state and am pro choice so I am not supportive of efforts to cloak discriminatory health care exclusions (for either women's or trans people's health care) in religious exemptions. If the nuns don't need abortions, they should not get them. Also, I think that Opus Dei members *are* fringe and am not surprised that the FBI was monitoring some Catholics for domestic extremism. But, obviously we have very different politics so it's good that we both can be supportive of Kavanaugh's safety and we can all mourn Pope Francis in a respectful way (assuming, that is, that you are not a Catholic like Ross Douthat who took potshots at the man while he wasn't even in the grave, or a non-Catholic like Trump who doesn't embody the faith in any way). Liberals have just as much right to the Catholic faith as conservatives - so you don't need to worry about the (non??) Catholics. Jesuits and red line Jesus's words in the Bible are pretty clear about the need for social justice and embracing those on the fringe of society.

Sorry, if you confess to molesting your kid, you shouldn’t be able to hide behind your religion. Maybe god will forgive you in the afterlife, but here on earth in the United States of America, this is a crime for which you must answer, and anyone who knows of this atrocity must report it.

This is an agreement within the legal system. The church is not. Why should it be allowed to have separate, extra-judicial privilege? The church is not above the law.

Everyone is appalled by what happened at Kavanaugh's home, even the liberals, which would be 95 percent of his neighbors. But to say Trump sharing an image of himself as the Pope as the faith is in mourning and about to go through the conclave is somehow related is bizarre. The conservatives I know all have a persecution complex, and they will seize on anything and say look how we suffer. The fact that there is outrage at Trump's ridiculous narcissism for posing as a Pope during this important time feeds into the conservative persecution complex - as evidenced by you. Trump is an example of all seven deadly sins in action. And some of us other Catholics do not care for him at all.
