Duke was massively popular at my kid's school this year. Not sure how many students applied, but four students are attending this fall. My impression is that Rice's stock is rising. For the past couple of years, at least one student goes whereas it doesn't seem to have been on the radar at all before. Great school, much nicer vibes than most peer institutions.



Just checked Naviance. More than 70 students applied to Duke, 14 to Rice. Not comparable of course, but the word about Rice is getting out.

Congratulations. I actually know David from when we were both undergrads studying chemistry at Harvard College. He had alien level capabilities, truly extraordinary creativity. Helped me decide on switching career paths to being a doctor. I hope your daughter has a chance to work in his lab, blown away by what he is doing with gene editing.

My daughter wants to study chemistry and is focused on one day working on interesting problems in biological chemistry (or perhaps better described as chemical biology). She was fortunate enough to be admitted to Harvard, Stanford and MIT. Ultimately decided on Harvard because she liked the vibe on visits but also idolized one particular faculty member there, David Liu. She’s hoping to one day push the boundaries of the field like he has done when it’s her turn to do so.

Interesting choice for one who was offered admission by Princeton, MIT, CalTech & Stanford. Having difficulty imagining one who would qualify for such STEM superstar universities selecting Harvard. What do I not understand ?


If this is the same kid at my DC’s school, I heard that although Stanford was the perfect choice on paper for their interests and kid liked Stanford. In the end, they preferred the east coast and has multidisciplinary academic interests. I think the kid really loved MIT, but Harvard would be better in case they changed their mind about major like many college students do. Ability to cross-register at MIT as a Harvard student is also a plus and put Harvard above Princeton and Yale for that reason.

Isn’t it fkg ridiculous? My kid is at a different Ivy. I’m in molecular bio myself and seeing him cancel contracts and fk w/ NSF and grants while he has zero idea of the fallout or what he is actually erasing by halting research at these agencies and universities. He’s such a child.

I mean what’s the alternative? Go to a university he loves? High Point? He’s not going to be around forever. He’s not the Terminator and the people that align with him will not be judged kindly once it’s all over.

Only denial was UT. Notre Dame was the final pick.
